Last night I started polishing a spare IDI cover I've got. It's going but I have a few questions for those who have done it before or who have experience with this type of work. On the LD9 IDI cover there are grooves all across the top. Sanding down the tops of the grooves was easy, getting the valley between is easy as well but there are small lines of coating that are very difficult to remove along either side of every valley. I've only done 5 of them so far and I noticed when I flipped it over the other side was still covered in the coating! Is there anything I can use to get a uniform sanding so I don't have to go back, bunch up some sandpaper, and sand in a specific spot for a few minutes just to remove a tiny bit of that coating?
Also, I noticed that doing the lettering looks like it will be very difficult. What could I do to make that go a little easier?
Oh, and as far as sandpapers I am starting dry with 120 and then 300. Then I'll be going wet with 800 and 1500 and finishing wet with 2500 when I can find it. I figure once I get all of this gray coating off it should go pretty easily from that point on.
best bet would be to sandblast it to get all the coating off. Might want to add one or two different grits of sandpaper between the 300 and 800, otherwise you'll be doing a lot of work with the 800 to get it smooth.
