ok so i have a99 cavalier and i dont have a tach.....whats the easiest thing to do ?? buy aftermarket tach???(do i need a tach adapter for 99 cavaliers) or buy a gauge cluster and will it automaticly have a tach for me thanks to everyone for looking
Rich Grayo Jr. wrote:you could swap in a 98+ z24 cluster,o, if you want aftermarket, then yes, you need the adapter.
if i swap the z24 98 one then i wouldnt need anythng just plug n play?? would the mles switch over??
no miles will not switch over
in not exactly sure how all that craziness works. i've never had to deal with a digital odometer, so im not really the best person to answer that question. all i know is one year, they decided to no longer store the miles in the cluster but in the bcm, so you could just swap the cluster, do the passlock relearn, and be on your way.

00+ is stored in the bcm. i know the 95-99 is stored in the cluster. i think you may have to take it to get reprogrammed. if you have the tumbler, you could easly swap that out. thats what i did with mine.
I just got an autometer 2 1/16th tach and their adapter. The tach cutoff is 7k rpms, so it suits the car well. ATM-1397
Whats this adapter you guys are talking about, I've been looking for that @!#$ thing everywhere and i dont know where to find one. My tach maxs at 3200
thats because you have 2.2. get the autometer adaptor. they are like 65-70 bucks
swap out clusters. its so easy and its plug in and play as long as u do the passlock relearn. if u have a digital odometer its really easy just plug in and go. but if u have a tumbler u have to swap it out which is very easy also just as strippedcav98 said.
tach adaptor is also called a pulse doubler, or a PX2. This is because any aftermarket tach will read only half, on our cars. You need to double the signal
