How to polish Diamond Plate mats ?
Tuesday, April 17, 2007 10:50 PM
I have a set of Diamond Plate floormats from Aplus that I purchased last year, and they have been out since last november because I learned my lesson about diamond plate in the winter on my first set . Anyways, I am about to put them back into the car since its spring, but they are pretty dirty and have some swirl going on, and so im not sure what you use to bring the shine back out of them and also to remove dirt.

I searched and only found one post talking about this, and it wasnt really what I was looking for, so I was hoping maybe one of you would have a suggestion ?

i always use meguir's aluminum polish on mine. now if you used them daily and got any deep scratches, you'd have to sand that out just like anything else. starting with the proper sized sandpaper then working the grit up higher and higher till you were up to the polish. but id just use the polish first, see how it looks, then decide if you have to do more. because with all the gripping pieces on those things, sanding them is going to be a real pain.

I've tried a ton of different metal plishes and Mothers Billet Polish work the best out of all of them. I came across it one day browsing through the motorcycle supplies at a local store and was suprised that it was with the Mothers Mag/Aluminum Polish with the car stuff. It's more expensive than the normal polish, but it works damn good. I used it on my wheels all the time. Works great.

<--- This is the stuff I use.

<---- This one is good, too, but the first one works so much better.

Alright so I got a Mothers Polish Ball Mini, Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish ( as in the 2nd pic ) and some Microfiber polishing towels, so I appriciate the unput, and as far as usage goes, is there something I can do to clean up the mats? They are a lil scratched up ( not bad ) but kinda hazy and have a lil dirt on them, so is there something I should use to clean them before I polish them, or do I just go to town on the polish?

Also, I have to do my engine bay since it is made of mostly polished parts and its just as dirty if not worse, heres how it used to look..

...and well, it doesnt look like that anymore , same with the mats. So you can see why I would love to get this stuff polished lol, it should make a big difference.

So, do I just apply the polish to the area, then use the power ball on it till its rubbed in, and then let it dry and become hazy, and then use the towels to wipe it off? If im wrong let me know, because I would love to learn how to detail for shows and things ( when the car is done, of course ) so I wanna get this down.

Im also tackling fiberglass this week, so if I can get polished and wrap my interior in vinyl and do some glass work, I can make the car to the next level.

Thanks alot for the input and im sorry about the long post, but hopefully I can get this answered and I can post after pics if anyone is interested

this mean now your not selling the car again?

i'd just clean the dirt and debris off. u dont want to be rubbing polish in if there are dirt and rock particles. then you will be just scratching it up more. what you want to do depends on what level u want to take it to. clean it, then polish it up witht he mothers and see if the shine is good enough for you. if not and u stil dont want to sand it that way you can get a 4" polishging disc and some polishing compound and do that, then do the mothers. if your coming down saturday for the meet, bring one down early and stop at my house and we can use the polishging disc on it and see what the diffrence is. this is the reason i just use mine for show. their nice when clean but they get dirty way to easy. and take to much time to clean lol
