Fiberglassing....
Friday, September 21, 2007 7:20 PM
Ok, so i have a sunbird, and i decided to fiberglass my front dash, and well, its not going so well... i pulled the vynal off, then sanded the S***load of glue off, then bondoed over some holes i didnt need, then started laying fiberglass when i got to the spot where some vents go... no bottom anymore... speaker covers and other vents dont go right as well, since the vynal had spots for it to go into... my ? is.. would i be able to just go and get another sunbird dash, leave the vynal on, and fiberglass over the vynal, but not fiberglass in where vents go and such so theyll still fit right? i think it would look alright, its just a matter of... can i do it? anyway, thanks in advance for any and all help, i appriciate it, look foward to replies!!

What I would do is lay down some aluminum foil over the new dash, fiberglass it the way you want it, then when its done, peel it off, remove the foil and shave down the vinyl, then put the f/g cap on and screw it in...

wrap your vents in tape, cover then in aluminum foil, stick them in place and fiberglass or use kitty hair to fiberglass right up to them. then when it dries, pull the vent out and you have your location.

Could you explain that like more in detail? i dont exactly get what your sayin.. sorry lol... but i think it might be easier to fiberglass onto the vynal.. if i can? cause i have like a 1/2" gap from the plastic and the speaker covers... no bottoms for the vents on the passenger side, and like a 1/4" gap all the way around.. the side vents ill have to find a way to be able to have the tabs go in so they hold.. i think the vynal would just be easier, because ill fiberglass all but the places where the tabs go, then everything would fit... but would the fiberglass stay very well on the vynal? and how easy would it all be?? thanks

if u do what your wanting your dash is going to crack right at the vents area, you basically have to do all or none. i really doubt you could stop the fiberglass so its a straight line as well as being the same thickness.

wrap your vents int tape and aluminum foil to protect them from the resin and filler. then place them in your dash where they belong. u may need to use like wood and some hot glue from the backside to glue the vents in place so they are in the right position. then u can use cardboard to make a backing to cath the figerglass so to speak and mount this around the outter edge of the vents. you could spray some expanding foam around the vent and when it hardens you could use a razor blade and trim the excess off so its shaped how you need it, then you could just fiberglass over the foam up to your vent. once its hardened good, pull the vent out and trim the inner part of the foam a little bit (to make up for the thickness of the fiberglass) then fiberglass that area, now you have your opening for the vent and its the right size.

Ok, so pretty much, where there isnt a bottom, put cardboard there... like tape it there.. then take expanding foam and spray it around the vents to hold them in place, and trim, then lay to fiberglass over the foam?? the only problem there is, is it has two small peices that go on each side, the vent has like 2 tab kind of dot things, and the smaller peices fit onto it, to fit into where there are dots on the vynal peice to hold it in... how would i do that? i would like the vents to still be removeable.. but if not, then thats ok too.... the ones im talking about right now anyway, also, what would i do for the whole speaker grille thing? and the side vents?? i think the sides i will have to keep like perminant, and non-removable for them to stay... and the speaker peices, i definatly want removeable..

Well... got the pics... keep in mind this is my first time fiberglassing anything lol... i think it should be ok once the resin goes over, and i sand, thats after i get the 1st coat done! lol... but does it look OK anyway? also, thanks for help with fitting this stuff... i also want to paint the vents black with a blue dash... so if theres any tips then i would appriciate that to... should i probably paint them before i fiberglass them in? also, i dont really need the vents to swivel really, theyll be fine just the way i have them, if i have to make them permenantly fiberglassed in... but, i want to do this right, so anyway, thanks for your help!! its really appriciated..

for the speaker grills what u can do is take any grill you want and find out how it mounts. like if its a screw down type just take some wood and cut it to fit say a circle or squart type grill so u can screw the grill to it, then you just fiberglass the wood piece into your dash, if its a type of push pin type that just push down youlle have to look at how it connects and maybe fiberglass the mounting rings onto your dash with a somewhat similar process. if you do wrap the vents up good and tight so there isnt large folds in the foil or tape and use the expanding foam around it the little bumps should be there when u pull the vent out. those rectangular vents on top just tape them up, hold them in place and fiberglass up to them. youlle have to get a little handy with a dremel to make the little tab pieces on the end but if you take your time and go slow you can make it so your vent grill pieces will push right into place.

Well... i was thinking about just fiberglassing the speaker things in there like... take fiberglass and kind of angle it to stick to the speaker cover, and then like break it out when its done.. would that work, it would come out and go in... might come out going over railroad tracks or something?? but.. should be ok maybe? the side ones ill just fiberglass to perminatly... then what about the passenger side ones? the ones with no bottom? and the huge gap on the sides?? thanks again.. your all a big help...

thats fine just tape up the speaker and then spray it with pam cooking spray that way the fiberglass wont stick to it and youlle be able to pop it out. if you do it right and take your time it will fit in there tight.

as for the bottom one do as we talked about earlier, temporarily secure your vent or whaterver in place (taped up) then use some expanding foam around it, once it expands and hardens just shave it so it matches up with the contrours of your dash, then fiberglass it.
