my auto short shifter idea, need input
Wednesday, October 24, 2007 2:55 PM
ok, here's my idea. instead of cutting off the top of the shaft, just cut off the bottom weld on the metal part (black), cut it down, then, after you weld the shortened part back to the base, just trim down the middle part (yellow) so that the same amount sticks out the top as it did stock. this way, you keep the top of the shaft and you dont have to recut the little groves and stuff in it. it probly could only be cut down about an inch or so depending on what kind of knob you have. here's a quick drawing i did to help you visualize it.

what do u think? any questions/comments are welcome

im confused all together ha, why not just cut the top part?

b/c the knob wouldnt fit right, i would have to cut the groove in the middle, and cut the grooves on the side for the pin that holds the knob. and also, id still have to use a pipe cutter or something to cut the metal part and not the plastic part. the way i figure it, if i just cut the top, its not going to be secure and move around. i want it was stock as possible, but shorter.

How are you going to weld that without melting the plastic piece or cutting it when you cut it off

he's bascially only cutting off / temp. removing the metal piece. the plastic stick will (hopefully) not be bothered. once he cuts the metal down to however short, he'll have to cut the top section of the plastic part to match....

i wish this didnt invovle welding...

I think just cutting the top down would be easier. Look my 5 minutes.

Id say its a better idea then cutting the top.

When i did mine, I had a few problems with the yellow shaft, granted I cut mine really short. The shaft is skinnier at the bottom then the top. If you are able to remove the material from the bottom, including the yellow button shaft, I think that would be a better route. More professional and more relable than just whacking a few inches off.

I have an even easier way, granted some may not want to do this but just cut off the 2" or however short you'd like it w/out interfering with the shifter going into 1st and unhook the spring for the saftey switch. Not the safest but quick, easy, and you can put whatever shift knob on that you want.

i dont see what the big deal about chopping the top off is. with a dremel its a 15 minute project and works perfectly fine.

id agree that welding could cause the plastic piece on the inside to melt from the heat itself. just sounds like allot of work for nothing. mines been done now for about 4 years now without any issues.

that and its just annoying to have such a freaking high standing shifter. let alone us poor 95-99 guys with the stereo down below where the freakin shifter blocks it

x2

No reason to over complicate it, do it just like he said, doesn't have to go on the space shuttle, cut away and simply be careful when you get down around the yellow. I had to do this process several times until I got it down to the exact height I wanted.
