fiberglass tutorial??
Thursday, November 29, 2007 8:40 AM
for those of you that are interested in trying to work with fiberglass, but like me need something visual to aid as opposed to reading.......... what would be a tutorial you would like to see? any particular project? im trying to think of a piece somewhere in the car that anyone here would have knowledge about and be able to follow step by step.

give me your input as I will be puting together a full tutorial from start to finish on something, but the key is to decide what.
i was thinking just for basic purposes, and since i have one laying around...to take the front vent to the HVAC system near the window and shaving it flat, just to take you thru the steps.

so heres your chance to voice your opinion. tell me your thoughts.

since you mentioned being visual, i too need to see things sometimes, so id like to see what piece you're talking about lol

my first guess is the defrost vent in the middle? and what exactly did you mean by shaving it flat?

something basic, i think you should mould a 40" lcd into your backseat area. anything less will just be letting the jbo down.

Basic would be good, like glassing you rear speaker deck or a monitor into the radio bezel

ya i was referring to the middle defrost vent near the window, and by shaving flay i meant basically making it look flat like your airbag cover does.

What about how to make a mold of something?

I was thinking about making a mold of an OEM hood and making a custom one. I know thats a big project but if you did a tut on something small that would use the same steps or w.e...

Just an idea

rear deck, dash, radio bezel or speaker in door panels. whaever you choose, i'll pay for shipping and materials... well.... still depends on shipping since i'm in canada i need all of them except the radio bezel. i'm willing to try for the remaining parts using your tutorial.

i think the easiest/cheapest to ship out of those would be the gauge bezel. if you want to ship it to me i can work with that.

either way i have a bunch of glass projects coming up, so i should have a good write-up in store.....maybe this weekend

How about the dash, the most difficult piece to glass.

i may have a bunch of pics from when i glassed mine, but i would have to disagree about it being the toughest part to glass.....it was honestly one of the easier pieces

especially in comparrison to 100% custom jobs where you make the entire structure

ive been contemplating puting 8" subs in the doors, the rear deck, and the dash...just trying to find a good set that will match with my curent subs

Joey, The rear dash is a good starter project, but the dash bezel modification would be one i would like to see. There are a few of those around already though. I would like to see a center console mod, as i need ideas for mine :-)

The Rear Dash pad is so easy. It was my first project, look at the sticky at the top, apply those steps to a dash pad.

Its not much of Tutorial, but my car domain has some progress pics. I used Bondo Resin and Filler (Yuck bad choice), a spare back deck (Which I have an extra of now), T shirt Material, and the tools from the sticky. It was a positive experience. I didn't end up painting it, instead i wrapped it in Carpet and caller it a day. I'll post the final pics up today sometime, i never got around to it.
