fiberglass trunk progression

well since i havn't found a painter yet (had hoped to have the car painted by now) i went ahead and have been starting on my trunk, since i ditched the sub enclosure i had a bit more room to work with and decided to add one of my amps back there. its just started so wont be a while for paint, so consider these more sneak peaks then the finished product.

first i started off by giving myself a solid base to work off of, i also wanted to make sure that i had full access to the spare tire and access to the rear bulbs incase they'd need changing. the string was just strun in the middle to give me my center point so i could try and somewhat line things up.

next i made a ring for the bottom, i had an outter ring and an inner ring, the outer ring will be attached to the fiberglass, the inner ring will be my removeable panel to get to the spare, it will be covered in black leather.

this is the point when i decided to add the amp in back so i made up a framework for it, and made a smaller plate to mount the amp on that matches the one on the floor, the piece that the amp is on will also be black leather,

next i added smaller rings for the trunk arms to slide thru. i attached these from behind to my amp rach frame

then i made smaller rings for the rear tail lights, these were pretty much just so i could get to my rear bulbs. notice the shape is the same as the amp rack and spare cover, this is so everything is similar and matches up with everything else.

once the bulb peices were done i pulled everything back out and threw the router on a few pieces to get them curved right, i sanded everything as best as i could and cleaned it up.

so what do you do when u have 5 rolls of masking tape? well u protect the trunk of course.

then u spray some glue down and apply aluminum foil to everything as well for extra protection.

and heres what you get after u lay down your material stretching it as best as u can and throw on your first layer of fiberglass. its not to bad, the trunk arm pieces will need some work, and the left side is a bit further out, this was do to me getting pissed when i was getting all the material line up and i screwed the bottom trim ring to the floor and not making sure it was perfectly aligned, but thats life.

i had hoped to get all the fiberglassing done, but it was mid afternoon sunday and was cold and windy, and i wanted to make sure the layer was completly dry before night so we didnt have to inhale fumes during the night.

I really feel people can really learn alot from the things you do man. You take alot of time it seems in planning and then laying your plan out before you jump into it. I'll definitley be check back on your progress.

thanks for the compliments guys, anyone want to come over and sand on it for a few days to help me finish it off? no? anyone? bueller? bueller? lol

ADAM if u want to do it just let me know of course u need to come out to my place to do it

GREENFIRE. yeah laid down the tape to protect the car. the foil is added on top because the fiberglass wont really stick to the aluminum foil. one step i forgot to do is spray the aluminum foil with a light coat of pam u know the non stick stuff your mom uses in the kitchen, u could lay the fiberglass right on the tape but the tape and fiberglass tend to cure together and the tape sticks to the fiberglass piece, thatst how i used to it but was a paint to pull even kickpanels off the floor with just tape, with the aluminum foil, u can just pop the piece right up pretty easily.

SCORPIO1, yeah decided to go allot more wild. ive also pulled the back seat out and will be putting my subs and other stuff back there.

This is Z2FST4U: First off VERY VERY nice work! I just have a few questions on it. Is there going to be subs somewhere (if so where) or are the amps to power the components or speakers? My second question is what material did u use to stretch for the base of the enclosure? And lastly, if you ARE having subs....will it be an enclosed box?

Again, VERY VERY nice work, i can tell alot of time has been spent preparing all the parts and setting the whole trunk up! I cant wait to see the final product!! Be sure to have more progress pics through out the build. I know all of us wanna see!

Z2FST4U. yeah there will be subs, i pulled my original fiberglass sub enclosure out and its for sale, we decided to rip out the back seats and put all the audio there, and since we decided to do that i figured i'd just make a new box. so i'll be putting the tens probalby in each corner by the side windows it will be sealed. the trunk will be sealed off from the interior. still debating on how to setup the back seat area, im thinking the sub amp will be right behind the amp in the trunk but facing in towards the interior, and then seriously debating wether to buy another amp and another pair of 10's to do it up a bit more. but we have a kid on the way so thinking of wrapping all the audio gear around a center mounted baby seat and then having the seat upolstered to match the racing seats, would be kinda neat for the car show aspect.

as for the material its a green stretchy material i found at joanns fabrics, its very similar to speaker cloth, but it stretches for ever, u could proalby take a 6" piece and pull it in any direction to about 2 feet. when i found it i bought about 9 yards of the stuff. but honestly if i redid this i think i'd try and find a bit of material a bit less stretchy because on areas like around the trunk arms, i had to staple the material to the wood and its so stretchy that it kind falls back on itself around the staple. so i have this lump of materaial there that i'll have to sand off.
