Well I have been having problems with my turbo gasket and return and a few other little things so my roommate (nustyle) and with the help of me decided to take just about everything off fix things, and clean up things..
first it started with a new valve cover and valve cover gasket, because with all the cam jobs my old valve cover gasket was shot...
hmmm what did we find when I took off the valve cover? oh the little things that hold my cams down are loose on my intake cam... totally about 3 loose... 1 almost all the way out don't ask me how or why.. but I did notice a difference in power with these all tightened down which could have been attributed to a slight lift in the intake cam due to lack of tightening allowing my valves to now open properly ( done before turbo weekend)
we got the car up and ready
here is a shot of the oil that has leaked out the side of my valve cover, down the back of my block and down onto my turbo along with my leaky return... now fixed... you can also see how my bad exhaust leak colored the back of my motor a nice carbon black
here is a good shot of the underside of the turbo and manifold to turbo nuts.. very tiring to get to the top left is a very nasty little bugger that we cant get anything on too to get 100% tight...
Nustyle (Joe, aka my roommate) mounting my car to get at the waste gate bolts and top turbo to manifold bolts...
here you can see the filth on the inside of the hot pipe... all cleaned up now and better then ever... also a little fuzzy but you can see how my feed line is rubbing my firewall fixed now as well
here you can see more of the dirt on the inside there, now cleaned as well as all the oil all over the back of my block and head for the shotty valve cover gasket.. now all cleaned..
this is what is left of the turbo to manifold gasket.. which was probly a good cause to my boost leaks at higher rpms...
here you can see (bottom right) the broken stud, now fixed and how nasty the back of the motor is due to the exhaust leaks
roommate (joe, aka nustyle) getting crunk during fixing, lol jk but he did have a few beers in him, and thats me sneaking into the picture
here is the beauty all cleaned up with the new 63 housing on and not the old 48 housing, I missed my huge top end pull from my old turbo with the 63 housing... also seen here is the new return flange, return gasket, return allen bolts and return barb...
here is everything getting back together, now I have all grade 10 hardware...
and here is the final picture and how she sits now minus a screen filter, we cant get a silicone boot on there anymore and we are guessing it is because of the bigger 63 housing, maybe, maybe not... you can see the bolt on what I believe is the water pump housing is ALMOST touching the inlet... we tried slipping my old boot on and we couldnt get it to fit
Questions or Comments welcomed!!
(all of the half assed stuff shown is from Joe and I switching the new turbo on quickly and not doing a thorough job, when I received the car from cnfx it was in great shape...)

your profile says you're using the t3/t4 57 trim. do you have bigger plans later on or does this match up pretty well with the engine? I always got the impression that it was a little big for the engine. What turbo did you use to have on it?
Great job.
I need to do some "turbo maintenance" of my own...
Looking good!

What half assed stuff.....i put it back together the same way it came to me when we switched turbo's awhile ago. I don't remember a time I ever half assed anything when it comes to cars. Just glad i wasn't the one that forgot to tighten your camshaft bolt. With those few things out of the way.....everything that we did over the weekend is deffinatly going to make for a much more reliable vehicle. WIth new gaskets, locking washers, every nut and bolt in place this time, and new return line; she should run very nicely.
yum!
looking good sir.
i cant wait until its warmer to start working on my car again...right now its under a few inches of snow..

well I guess really nothing... the only thing that worried me from the beginning was the return... but eith all these things fixed it also made it faster
97redgt - yeah this is only a 50 trim... I need to change that... the old turbo spooled up a little later then this one

You guys obviously didn't have enough fun, nor did you take long enough to do it all. I see no humping pictures, no people sleeping with writing on their faces, no heman poses.... What gives?

nice man, whats your 1/4 and dyno numbers again?
I haven't seen you or your car for a while. You should try to get to the April ASCCA AutoX events at Hershey. They're on the 15th and 16th.

no official quarter mile but I am racing against low 13 second cars and hanging with and pulling on some... there are a bunch of guys around here that go to Maple grove all the time so I like to use that as a gauge
dyno was done on 9 psi with the bad gasket and 48 housing with 2,25 inch exhaust and I put down 206 whp and 240 tq

I don't go to York anymore because of the shift I work. You'd have to catch me at an AutoX or on Wednesdays and Thursdays, my days off.
