Fiberglass trunk setup
Thursday, January 10, 2008 11:56 AM
Well as some of you know, the previous trunk setup I made back in Nov. was just a quick fix I whipped up for the car show. I wanted a fiberglass trunk setup, but I didn't have the time to build it. This winter I began my new project. I've put a total of about 13 days worth of work into this within the past 4 weeks. I've gone along pretty far so far and I hope to be in primer in a little while.

I am installing 2 more 12" subs and 2 more amplifyers. I had these at home and didn't have room to fit it inside the trunk setup before.

This is a 4 piece mold.
1. Sub enclosure
2 & 3. left and right side walls
4. front piece where the trunk latch is.

This way when I need to work on the air ride underneath I can easily remove the walls for any maintenance work (esp draining the water trap).
It will hold the air tank, 2 compressors, 2 x 12" subs, and 2 amps.

Anywho, here are a few pics I snapped today.

Mind you, the left side will be where I will be installing the 2 amps. I'm still debating what to do really, but I believe I'm going to have them suspended (or at least 1 suspended).

This is the driver side wall. It wraps from the corner of the back of the trunk where the latch is, and goes around to the center of the back of the setup where it meets with the sub enclosure.

Needs some adjusting when installing:

the bottom of the passenger side panel meeting up with the subs.

the top of the passenger side panel meeting up with the subs.

Like I stated, these are all done in sperate sections to make it easier on myself to reach the tail lights, and air ride equipment.

I'll keep the pics coming as I go along.

i love your work but i think it would look better with the subs on each side of the trunk to make it more simetrical. you have the compressors like that, you should do your subs the same way with the amps down the middle. looks good though.

That is PIMP, how many subs does that make now? 6 or 8?

Looking good!

I don't know how it's going to work out, but I'm using a leader hose like such found on the front struts and remote mounting my drain cock out the spare tire well so I never have to remove the tank to do such...........might be an idea worth trying for you. I see no reason why the leader hose won't hold up to the pressure of the tank.

this one is looking way better vince. the curves definatly flow with the car better and having both subs in the corner makes it a little diffrent then 90% of the installs out there. from the way it looks now i hate knowing your going to be adding amps in and filling it in. it looks so nice now having that small amount of open space. enough space for cleaning supplies. i think for the amps id kind of stack them in the corner one in front of the other have the back one higher then the front so they take up a smaller footprint in the trunk.

Agrreddd. 110% right move... then throw some lighting underneath the amps to add to the stacked affect!!

thanks everyone.

I was going to make it symetrical, but then I thought exactly what Jason said...

I know...I wish I didn't have to put the amps in the trunk either. I just placed them inside there to see how it will look and it clutters it up so much, but I need them to run my power. I'm going to think of another way...maybe re-wire it and build a small fiberglass set up for behind the driver and passenger seat?...I'm still not to sure though.

I sadly don't have any progress pics, but I can explain how I did it.

Esentially first I created the fiberglass sub box. I made my wooden rings and mounted them using some wooden dowls and stretched some fabric over it and soaked it with resin. After that cured I was able to add on 5 layers of matting, filler and sanded smooth. I then taped the sub box with masking tape and placed it back into the trunk on top of the floor. I then used some fabric and stretched it from the top of the trunk where the weather stripping goes and I stapled it to the flooring and taped it up against the sub box. After I soaked it with resin and it cured I was able to cut out with a dremel tool where I wanted the individual pieces. (It was one huge fiberglass piece until I sliced it up). After my shape cured, the fiberglass mat was added and filler and sanding. It was actually one of the easiest setups I've done so far.

And Jason...yup, I do plan on stacking the amps ontop of another. Not sure what I will be doing, but I deff. know it will be done just like you suggested. The best part is I already have 2 blue neons wired up from the previous build to work with

yeah i feel you on the cluttered part. my trunk is just filled up with everything and its just to much. have been thinking about switching over to a rockford 360.2 for processing so i can remove the eq from the trunk and then hiding some stuff elsewhere just to get it a bit cleaner.

looking at your pics im sure your going to finish it up a bit but i think on the 3 pic by the driverside hinge you need to add onto the fiberglass so it looks a little more finished off.

oh and i think you guys are near toronto arnt you? im going to be doing a trip from here out to the eastern edge of pensylvania for a wedding, then going up to niagra falls for a day and toronto for a day or maybe two in june. we should try and hook up. i'd love the chance to get to see your damn car in person lol.

I don't know how big your amps are but could you hang one upside down under the shelf area and just hide the other one behind the fiberglass "wall".

The clean uncluttered look is killer.

Looks good Vince, I like the subs off to the side, very original. I STILL have to see this car!

Yo Vince, sick enclosure man! That wrap arround peice must have alot of flex to be able to fit into the trunk as one entire peice? I vote for Blue suede wrapped false floor, blue painted wrap arround peice and charcoal painted sub enclosure with the subs inverted for looks, and more air space in the small box. Then mount the amps towards the back side of the false floor but stack and kinda of staggered diagonally. I will photoshop.

Vince-wanna make me a skeleton like that and then ill finish it? I suck at the beginning process, so i end up scraping the project.
I like where your going with this alot.

Oh and that first question was a serious one!!

I actually changed my mind after the chop a little. I think the carpet should be charcoal suede just like it is now. Check out my vision
