A rare moment. Pics of the 'blu....
Thursday, February 28, 2008 5:39 PM
It's not often I post pics up on the .org but decided that I've put alot of work into the car and want to show it off a bit.
With the advent of the 'blu doing car shows this year, what better place to let people see it than with your peers.
So without further ado, on with the pics.
Criticism welcome as are ideas for improvement.
Thanks for looking.

An engine shot or two.

Suspension/ rear shot of the car.

And finally, the interior/ trunk pics.

Thanks for looking.

Not bad. Looks like it's all business.

Some good mods you got going there. I like the 3 point brace for the rear strut towers.

certainly is a different choice with the fire bezel, but not bad.
only thing i will say you should improve on is the front bumper. the 2.2 "smiley face" bumper kills me. but it doesnt look as bad with the lip. i think if it were body color it wouldnt look as good. as is it sort of looks like an old fashioned air dam
thats also a unique placement for the toyo badge
but that is one of my favorite colors for Js!
how well do those braces work? ive always wondered about the floor brace in the rear.
keep up the good work man!

I would like to see an american with the 2003+ sunfire sedan tails and center peice. I think that would be really cool.

i know you been around for a while, i respect that. But i am not feeling the looks of the car inside and out. I know you like it and put alot of work into it.

The Motor stuff and suspension mods i am a fan of for sure.

Personally I think if the car had the stock z front bumer, bigger rims, a plain C/f hood and tinted windows it would look good(in my eyes). Stock orange corners (or toyota ones). I like the 2.2 orange bumper lenses.
The interior- do you realllllly need a shift light in a Auto? Them seats really dont flow with anything else. Not sure what all the guages are for. Put the stock style climate controls knobs on i was going to say, till i see the other picture

but , your car and you do whatever you like and that is cool with me

Good luck.

(Just saying all that because i had my 96z all done up, stickers galore, fancy headlight/tailights, clear lights, blue lights, painted dash, gauges , different hood. You name it( not sure if you remember my name back then was GreenZ).
Then i shaved all the badges, put a 2.2 trunk lid on, painted it a darker green, stock headlights(i could see the road), toyota corners/2.2 bumper lenses. Then put the stock rims back on .

I had a whole new look, & feel to the car. clean, sleeperish(GM s/cd at that time with every bolt on), No hassle from the local kids, or cops and if felt nice to have a normal looking/feeling car till the s/c started spinning. )

The reason I think this car is just sick is being or the originality. I'm not sure if the sunfire tail light bezel on a cav is a first, but I can definently say I've never seen it before. Alot of originality, and a totally different look than most j's. Props!

I like the look but it's missing something. Only improvements I can think of is to paint the front lip, maybe some w-type or ls sides and an 03+ ls bumper. I love the color and that sunfire trunk, good work man.

I had something really funny to put here but it was too long.

For some reason I really like it. Love the suspension mods for sure. The grand am control arms are definately a nice touch. You autocross with this car? Looks like its certainly setup for it.

I like the whole functional thing you've got going on. Only gripe I have is the spoiler, not a fan. But hey whatever oodles your noodle right? What control arms are those? And is that a homemade system for the trunk? I like both.

Some things I don't like but overall it's sweet...

I think the thing I hate the most is the front bumper though...eww

Nice work though!

Wow, I didn't expect this much response.
Thanks too for the frankness of the comments and all are well taken and here are some answers.

The front 2.2 bumper was chosen because it's a GM product and the original Z bumper just didn't breath enough to keep the engine running cool in the hot summers, here in the Deep South.
I also plan on getting the front lip (and RK side skirts sitting in my room, soon to be on the car) painted body color. But right now, I spent over a month to get the paint to new condition and it's not time yet to repaint the car.
Once the engine and 5 speed are installed, then the paint will come in stock color with a pearl red clear coat.

The Sunfire tail to me just looks so good and aggressive. And yes, not many have done this so the uniqueness of the mod is something that I like too.
It takes the bareness of the trunk away and gives the car some nice looks. Carbon fiber trunk is coming soon anyway so we'll see how that affects the Sunfire tail section once I get the trunk.
Also, when the car is painted, all carbon fiber will be painted body color for a monochromatic theme.

how well do those braces work? ive always wondered about the floor brace in the rear.

Tabs, the bars work wonderfully and wouldn't have it any other way. It's all custom work and got the ideas from some of the Cusco products they use for the WRX and Evo braces they sell.
SInce they don't make such items for the J-bodies, thought I'd do it myself and it was a success.
The chassis is so stiff that the KYB struts can't keep up with it. Tein SS's are in the plans or some KW's in the near future.

Quote:

and tinted windows it would look good(in my eyes).

Jake, I had tinted windows and will never have them again.
I've now got to replace the rear window so that I can have my rear defroster. It was the tint that like all tint I've seen turns blue/ purple and vowed that because of this, would never have tinted windows again. I've had tinted windows since 1980, in all of my cars, and in every situation, it's turned purple, faded, or just gone bad.
The stock orange corners may be going back on and it's just been recently that I got rid of the factory clear corners that I had on my Z bumper to the ambers. This adds color to the car which it needs to stand out from the crowd.
And yes, the shift light is quite necessary as I drag raced this car for 4 years, winning two back to back trophies in two different states with the car.
The shift light is needed because when I reach the traps, I'm near redline and ready to shift to 4th gear with the auto. When I drag raced, I'd race in 3rd gear so the shift light let me know that I was in need of shifting out into 4th gear after I went through the traps. I hope this explains it a bit better why I have one in the car.
The HVAC knobs are back to stock and the white knobs you see in the picture are from the Grand Am with the rubber removed. I liked the red glow at night from them but the white got tiring.
All of the gauges you see are used and give me information. Nothing you see is junk or useless or even installed for aesthetic reasons.
Oil pressure gauge on the dash, Aeroforce Scan gauge, a/f gauge, and volt gauge on the pillars. The a/f and volts gauge will be replaces with another Aeroforce scan gauge along with a wideband for true a/f readings for my HPT or MS setup to come.
The seats, I love the seats, and love the red color. They go good with the car and if these were Sparco's, would you still hate them?? They fit great and eventually will have Sparcos so they'll be red too.
And Jake, I thank you for the honesty of your post. I too want a stealthy car but I also like something just a bit different too. Thanks for your comments man.

Sec-z, thanks man and I appreciate it.
Zyaaaa, coming from you it's well taken and appreciated.
We've been around my friend and have see our cars go from one thing to another.

And neubreed, the trunk is a custom setup that anyone can do with parts from the junkyard.
It works and am glad to have tried something different that actually made an improvement for the betterment of the car.
This car is so tight in the chassis and the ride, is WOW.

Thanks again all and maybe in a couple of years will update again. Then, the 'blu will be something very special to me and a finished, complete project.

put the 95-99 z24 front bumber on... itll look 10 imes better than that one even with the lip

"I did it because I wanted to see what it would look like. You should be greatful that I even told you that it would look good. If your to dumb to use photoshop and change the color of your own car then you don't need to see it changed. I'm not going to give my work away. I'll sell the pic to you though for $15."-Adam Kalin

^^JBO is about not being that guy

^^ he already stated that the z bumper (that he originally had on the car) didn't breathe well enough to keep the engine cool

you know i love it james!!! it's really come along way!

Re: A rare moment. Pics of the 'blu....

Chris, I originally had the Z bumper on the car.
I actually like the 2.2 bumper and don't want a body kit style bumper on the car because that is what everyone seems to go with.
I guess I'm a little different there and again, like to keep everything near factory looking while keeping everything GM or close.

I guess the only bumper I'd go with would be the Import Fighter front bumper but then again, everyone seems to love this including myself.
Maybe down the road I may but that huge opening in the front would look wierd on a n/a car with no intercooler behind the opening.
So I'll stick with this for now and there's plenty of air getting to the radiator and oil cooler.

StreetDreamZz, love your car man and you're would be close to what I'd want to emmulate.
It's clean, functional, and very well done man.
And yeah, the skirts are going on in the next week or so, and maybe a IF rear bumper down the road.

MoNkeE, the control arms I did myself, and are the ones off of the Alero from 1999. I've got a how-to on how to do them if you'd ever want to do them yourself.
The trunk is all custom as noted in the previous post. I've got a how-to on this too.
Just check out the website in the sig below for some information on the above.

gtpsunfire , I do have intentions of track days for the car once the n/a build is done, and the 5 speed dropped in placement of the auto.
This is my intention, my goal, and my focus for the car.
Finally in the 8 years of owning the car, I've figured out what I want out of this car. It will be a beast while getting respect for all of us J-bodies when it's done.
Too many haters out there you know.
