pics from before and after a car show

Well this show was the first one of the year I put my car in, which most likely will be the last one for this year too. I had this plan to take pics of it on display, however after all the work I did I ended up forgetting my camera at my shop! So that is why there is only before and after pics! It was not a bad show, maybe a 100 cars or so, very small town. I got to say though that this particular small town doesn't seem ready to accept 4 banger powered cars at a show and shine. Wow insult after insult from spectators, it was crazy! Judges seemed to have similar opinions too. There was a chevy truck on one side of my sunfire and an el camino on the other side. I watched the judges carefully inspect the truck, skip my car and move on to the el camino, I pretty much started laughing about it because I couldn't quite believe it! Anyway regardless of the b.s. it was nice to be at a show again.

As you can see I am a freak about keeping the car clean!

I know the engine doesn't look great but I am really hoping to do a 3400 swap this winter.

Ah and my other baby, a 1986 Redline bmx, I like it almost as much as my car!

One of the cleanest sunfires period, if only it were stick I would rock it hell I'd drive it either way. Very nice car. Makes me want to stop shopping for a z to daily drive and get a sunfire.

I used to experience the exact same thing with my Sunfires. It made me mad at first, but after a while I learned to accept it and say @!#$ them, it's about what I like not anyone else. What I find odd is that your Sunfire is so clean. I could understand people making snide comments and such if it were all riced out, but it's not. That's what would really piss me off is that there is nothing there to even laugh at. Morons.

The 'fire looks absolutely perfect Chris! Makes me miss mine so much . I always look forward to seeing new pictures of your Sunfire. Keep it up and @!#$ the haters !

Very clean! Not that it is my car, but my only critisicm would be get some real eyelids and ditch the canister muffler. Other then that, love it! Kind of reminds me of a white version of my car a little bit but not really lol.

Also, did you paint your reverse lights white???

wow. that carpet looks fantastic. so just how many hours did you spend on putting the alternating lines in the grain? i love doing this with my cars. call me anal but looks like you too enjoy this look.

i hear ya on the judges doing the good ole skip over. its BS i know... but go back to the same show net year. they will give you the time of day if you keep coming back. it took a couple years of doing this for the judges to even give a damn... but man once they did, sh!t started happening and trophys started flowing.

i cant say im a big fan of the wheels but they look good. you're tails look freaking amazing. people-this is how proper tinted tails look.

i usually despise bold, bright colors against our interiors but that white pulls it off. i actually really like it. you did a good job.

Wow thank you everyone for the comments! I sure wasn't expecting this many! I will try my best to address them. For the carpet, believe it or not it is the original with over 84,000kms on it! See I'm psycho when it comes to detailing, haha. There was a comment about center caps or lack thereof, they were actually stolen a few years back and I have had zero luck finding replacements. I figure the car is due for upgraded wheels someday soon anyway. As for the transmission it is actually a standard, hard to tell in the pics and I'm guessing also because its not a short shifter either but I promise it is a 5-speed car! The fake eyelids and the exhaust will be changed out for next year, I have been hoping to do a cav front end for a long time. The exhaust I seem to change out once a year anyway!

Carrie thanks for the encouragement! My car doesn't come close to your old sunfire, you are the master of subtle mods and you are doing an awesome job with the Vibe! I will never understand the car show spectators that just have to make nasty comments knowing full well that the car owner can hear them. Sure there are lots of cars out there that I am not terribly fond of but I would never go up to someone and say hey your car sucks, why did you even bother bringing it here? Like you say its best to just accept it and let it go!

Thank you sir! I know exactly what you mean being crazy about cleanliness! The carpet lines are a must for me, plus its awesome when someone peeks their head inside the car and is shocked to see that! The tails I used model paint then cleared them and wet sanded the hell out of them. I was absolutely shocked by how they turned out, cops hate them with a passion though! Thanks again for the comments, your cavalier is so nicely done, love the black and white combo!

So what are those where the reverse lights would be on a 95-99? I know he has them in the bumper, I was asking if those were lights he painted over between the lightbar or are they just reflectors or what? Sorry, I'm not too familiar with the 00-02s.

You're welcome! Awww... thanks for the kind words, but IMO your Sunfire is just as clean and subtle as mine were, if not more. I'm glad to hear you like the Vibe . I took it to it's first Cruise Night last night and the whole time I was there I barely even saw anyone come over and look at it which kind of surprised me, but at least I didn't hear anyone talking $hit . Back when I had the GT I used to get really offended if people would say negative things, but after a while I learned to just ignore it because everyone has their own opinions and all that matters is that I'm happy with it. Like you said, even if I am not fond of a car I would certainly never say anything anywhere near the owner of the car because that is just plain ignorant and uncalled for.

On the '00-'02s they are just reflectors .

Hey thanks a lot! I usually end up painting some interior panels in my cars, however this car I just smoothed the 2 parts out then had a body shop spray them and wow was I ever impressed with what they did! Haha I'm glad to know that I am not the only crazy person that spends time grooming carpet, keep up the great work on your convertable it looks awesome!

Carrie that sucks that people were ignoring the Vibe at the show. I think there are a lot of people with the mentality that if the car isn't 30+ years old with a chevy or a ford badge on the grill then it doesn't belong at a show. The worst show I entered was a few years back with a 94 sunbird I just finished building, lots of people loved it but there was one guy that flat out hated it! He spat on my engine while him and his buddies were discussing the reasons why my car didn't belong. I don't get mad often but I was heated that day! Anyway just have to keep it in mind that no matter what there are always people that appreciate cars regardless of age make or model. Besides, now that Pontiac is dead you have yourself a future collectors item!!

this is my personal opinion so don't get too bent out of shape on it, but for a decent car show. your car to me is a light on things done to it to enter. same thing goes with carries vibe. is it clean? sure, but its not that old, and not that much done to it thats really going to draw people into it to make them want to look. now i will say that i have seen hundreds if not thousands of examples of cars at shows worse then both of yours that i just go "why" but even then i dont disrespect the car. and i judge them as if it was any other car at the show.

if your car is clean, super clean it allot of times won't get any attention unless its really super old. your car isn't old enough to fall into that category. and its not modded enough to fall into the "hey lets look at all he has done" category. so if you continue to show expect allot of people to just walk past it without a second glance.

now on a personal level as for the show you went to, if that would have happened to me i personally would have went straight up to the person judging the show and had a word with him about the lack of respect. if you paid you money to enter you should get the same chance as everyone else to compete. don't be a dick about it, but explain yourself profesionally. explain that your car is no diffrent then any other car at the show and it should be treated as such. remind him that you are the future generation of car show guys and to be ignored is just extremley inconsiderate. and that as a car show promoter they should be there to grow the car scene and not there to shut people out just because the car isn't a favorite of theirs.

I agree my car is very mild, especially in comparison to your sunfire! I have been entering shows for almost 10 years now and have never gone to one expecting to fill my trunk with awards. I attend shows because I enjoy them, and especially enjoy the process of getting a car ready for display. I am a believer that you don't need to have multiple thousands of dollars into a car to make it worthy of attending. If a person is proud of their ride then hell yeah, enter it! What gripes me is the guys with their 100,000 dollar or more camaros, mopars, etc, that bash compact cars. There were atleast a half dozen restored/modified late 60's muscle cars in the same row as my car and from a detailing stand point were not worth a damn. Buffer trails all over the paint, streaky windows, un vacuumed carpet etc. I am a detailer by profession, so I notice these things maybe more than the majority might. My car was prepped far better, no comparison, but I guess as you say being clean doesn't always attract attention. Guess the trick is to just keep moving forward, ignore the hate and just enjoy the hobby.

Yeah, it sucks but I pretty much expected it because it's stock. I totally agree with you on the 30+ year old car comment as well.

That's so funny that you had a '94 Sunbird. That was my first car! My parents actually bought it brand new in January of 1994 and than gave it to me when I got my license in 2000. It's still alive and kicking to this day with 250,000+ miles on it. Funny story: I was at the same Cruise Night I took the Vibe to last night quite a few years back and there was a young kid with a '94 teal Sunbird Sedan (just like mine!). It was totally riced out, but I just couldn't believe someone had a Sunbird and was "modding" it so I went over and started talking to him. You should have seen the look on his face! He couldn't believe I was talking to him and being nice . He was actually a really nice kid, although I felt bad for the poor little riced out Sunbird .

I would have beat the $hit out of that guy and his stupid friends! Back when I had the GT, I had it at the same Cruise Night (it's the best one in the whole area, what can I say ). This was when I had the Magnaflow dual fart can exhaust. I was cleaning the car or something and I overheard some teenagers talking $hit about the fart cans. I stood up and said, "If you're going to talk $hit you might want to wait until you're away from the car." They couldn't get away from my car fast enough . It is fun to call people out when you hear them talking @!#$ and watch them squirm.

Personally, I appreciate every car to a certain extent because I understand everyone has different tastes, like, dislikes, etc. I am actually more drawn to stocker cars that are really clean. Case in point, last night there was a sick looking two tone (black/orange) newer Charger that came cruising in. It had chrome wheels with orange inserts, etc. It was an attention grabber for sure. Once we made our way over to check it out, I was horribly disappointed. Why? While the exterior was immaculate, the interior reeked of cigarette smoke and they didn't even bother to vacuum up the cigarette ashes off the floor. Totally turned me off immediately. Call me crazy, but you could at least vacuum your interior and wipe down your dash before you enter it in something like that. Just my $.02 though .

I don't know about a collector's item, but I will certainly be driving it until it completely falls apart. Maybe by than Pontiac will have been resurrected *fingers crossed*.

I couldn't agree more about my Vibe and I know that's why no one was really checking it out. I only took it to this particular Cruise Night because it was the last one of the season, the weather was absolutely perfect and there ended up being 800+ cars. Basically I took it just for the hell of it. The people that did check it out had positive things to say about it so that's a plus. I would rather have people walk right by it than have people laugh at it like people were doing with a lot of other cars that were there.

Haha you had a 94 bird too, thats crazy! Something about those cars, they just seem to keep going and going. I would still have mine but it was rearended and totalled. I have yet to call someone out when they bash my car, that sounds like fun though making them squirm haha! What you are saying about the charger you saw is exactly what drives me crazy, super nice car why not put in a little effort to clean it?
Here is my sunbird just because!

Re: pics from before and after a car show

My question is why muscle cars and newer and tuned car like yours together in a same contest? I see tuning is what you like, for example you have shaved the side badges, you have changed (or tinted) the tail lights, you have tinted the windows, you have put a nice set of 17's in your car, etc.. and your car looks great but for a tuning show.. In the other hand, many muscle cars are now classics and what is important with classics in shows is keeping them stock and fully restored as if they were brand new and that's one of the things that makes them so expensive.. So my question is how can you put into a contest classics vs tuned if the criteria for judging is so different? What was the show aimed to? I think you should take your car to a show where you can compete with similar types of cars.. If you take a fully restored stock muscle car to a tuning show, it would probably get raped, wouldn't it? hehe

I hope you get my point, I really like your ride but I also think it was probably in the wrong contest

Yep! It's sitting in the driveway as we speak. Still runs like a champ too! We also had an '89 that was totaled in '97. It had 315,000+ miles on it when it was totaled.

Yes, it is fun calling people out. Try it some time .

Very nice clean Sunbird! I love the two tone paintjob! I definitely would not spit on that engine, although I would eat off of it !
