Blinker trouble
Wednesday, December 22, 2004 3:46 PM
Hey, so I have this problem with my blinker. Whenever I signal to turn left, the blinker blinks at about twice the speed as it normally should. It is only the left blinker and it blinks fast both on the dash and on the outside of the car. When I turn on my hazards though, both blinkers blink at the normal speed. It is only when I signal with my left one. Any ideas? thanks

Yeah, it's your blinker fluid.

If the levels get low, it varies the speed of usually one of your blinkers. Since the circuit closes up when you use your flashers, you should have no problems with those (which you're not)...it only happens when you're using one blinker at a time, and usually only one gets affected, as you've noticed.

Just check your blinker fluid, you should find your problem right there.

get out and check your car... guranteed one of the bulbs is burned out, or your brake light is burned out.

If its one of your real tailight bulbs try to wiggle it. I know the sockets on my sunfire suck and the bubls come lose.

Happend to me before. I found the fuss for the blinkers and stuff and took it out and put it back in got a little loose somehow but after that it worked fine. Just my .02 cents
ok, wait a minute........there is blinker fluid?!?!?!?!? What do you need that for? I thought it was just electricity from the battery that powered the blinker. I'll have to check that, none of my bulbs are burnt out. That was the easiest thing for me to check. Well, time to go to the owner's manual and find out more about this "blinker fluid" contraption. Thanks!
he was just being an ass with the blinker fluid comment.

does the front and rear blink at 2x the speed. or does one blink 2x and one not work. im willing to bet you just need to wiggle a bulb.

ok, so I lied before about no lights being out. The front left blinker blinks at 2x the speed, the rear left one doesnt work. So you say I should wiggle one? And if that doesnt work, just replace it?..................that was some good BS about the blinker fluid, I love the newbies forum

Thanks again
Chevrolet has a recall for the taillamp sockets. That is why your turn signal is fast and why the bulb will not light up. Take it to a dealership and get it fixed.

*vent*

They put the new socket in my car and it was still crap... Then the manager of the service center gave me an attitude when I asked him why they didnt fix it. They didnt fix my car and gave it back. Did they even test it before they said they were done? WTF So I called up GM Goodwrench or whatever to complain. I told the lady my story and she said "Sir you can use hand signals until they can fix your turn signal." At that point I had to get off the pone and went back to the service center. The manager was way pissed (i guess because gm called him because of my complaint). He got more pissed when I kept pointing at the sign on the wall that said "WE DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME" So I walked him out to my car... jiggled the socket and it started working. Jiggled it again and it stopped. He said he would call GM and see if anthing else has come out for it... I go there every couple weeks and nothin new yet. Sometimes it still craps out on me at random times and I have to pull into a parking lot and jiggle. I taped around the bulb some and it helps but hasnt made it go away completley.

*end vent*

This is a common problem on 2003-2005 cavaliers. GM has a new taillamp socket for the rear that has fixed every cavalier that I have installed one in.

I had the same problem with my '03 Cav and just fixed it today. There is a recall on them because of poor connections to the tail lights, brake lights, Etc. You just need to remove the bulb, and if it isn't burned out, clean the connections, bend them out a little with a small screwdriver, apply a little dielectric grease and put it back together.
That's basically what the recall notice tells the dealer to do and it worked for me.

Good luck

Re: Blinker trouble

don't wiggle @!#$. its blinking twice as fast because thats what its supposed to do. thats how gm has built the system, so that you know when a bulb burns out. if you put your signal on to turn right, and it blinks 2x as fast, that means a bulb on the right side is burnt out. if it does it when you signal left, it means a bulb on the left side is burnt out. nothing about loose connections, or anything like that. if any bulb burns out, aside from headlights, the signal blinks twice as fast on the corresponding side to get your attention and let you know you need to change a bulb somewhere.
That cop took the whole thing way out of context. I mean, I was only going 145 Km/h in that
80 km/h zone because I was drunk and I wanted to get off the roads.
