95-99 Cav Headlights
Monday, November 21, 2005 8:13 PM
This is a pretty noobish question, but I have to ask it since I may be a bit backwards on my headlights with the amount of flashing I get.

I did a Cav front end conversion with new parts bought cheap off ebay. Seeing as how my town has no Cavs, only Sunfires, I don't know if the high beams are in the middle or on the outside. Can someone with a 95-99 Cav run out and check for me quick?

Thanks.

The High Beams are the inner lights (ones closer to the hood).

Thanks. Now I just have to check on how I connected everything in my car. Spend too much time driving my rust old Jimmy these days.

You're welcome

What do you mean "connected everything"? You talking about electrical work or body work?

I mean electrically. chopping of wiring harnesses and such. I'm sure I have it right, and other people are jerks that like flashing their high beams for no reason.

Have any pics of the install??? I'm doing that this coming Spring... Do the headlights bolt straight up?? How tough was the wiring harness swap? Any help or suggestions would be awesome.

yes the headlights just bolt up, no problem there. I didn't actually do a harness swap exactly, I made my own. The harness I made also has much thicker gauge wire and extra relays in it. That was mostly from when I ran hi wattage bulbs in my Sunfire and kept burning up the wiring harness.

The only thin I haven't gotten for the Cav swap yet is fender liners.

Do you have them aimed correctly? You can blind people with your low beams just as easily as with your high beams if they aren't aimed correctly.

i had them aimed 3 weeks ago, more people were flashing me afterward than before. that was the main reason i asked the original question. i've come to the conclusion that people are pricks.

If you are getting flashed by more than one car, then no it isn't because they are pricks. It is because they are obviously getting blinded by the glare from your lights. I have never been flashed in my Cav ever in 6 years.

You said you got cheap parts off of ebay? What brand are the lights? From your registry, it says you Crystal Clear headlights. So obviously those aren't OEM and there is a good chance they just suck at controlling the light output.

with the sunfire headlights, i was always getting flashed with stock bulbs, with APC bulbs it was less of a problem. Silverstars gave more flashing again. I've only had one type of bulb with the cavalier housings. they are quite bright bulbs, so it may be just that.

as for the brand that the cavalier housing is, i have no idea. threw the boxes out ages ago.
in terms of light control, as far as i can tell from driving in fog, they seem to be quite good. better than the sunfire housings anyway.

but i really have to believe that they are a lot of jerks out there. i get flashed in my car, in my wife kia rio with lows on, in my truck with only the passenger low working, in my parents caravan with yellowed lenses. most of the time they are flashing so closed to me that i can't flash back. my car is parked for the winter now so i'll have to wait and see what happens in the spring again.

so they're always flashing you just as they're going past? maybe they're just putting their brights back on or you never know something could be messed up with you vision. something to do with you peripheral view.

most of the time they are still far enough in front of me that they should be putting their brights on. some tho, yes, it could be them just putting their brights on and me catching it in my peripheral vision.

i tell ya, most of the people that i flash back don't seem to appreciate being corrected. i wait until the second flash before i flash back, and if i do flash back a larger majority of the people will just put thier brights on and leave them on.

from what the rest of canada says, the drivers in/around edmonton (area where i live) are the worst and most rude. i can drive 250km away and haven't had a problem. just around home.

Ive had no one flash me with mine (using Silverstars), no issues there. Do you happen to live in the country where its dark at night? (possible they are turning high beams back on after they pass you).

Two other things:

1.) Is it possible people are flashing to warn of a police car running radar?
2.) Is it possible your car sits a tad low in the rearend due to your stereo equipment?

cops only seem to patrol the roads i use once every 6 or 7 months, unless they have to close them for icy conditions in the winter. so while that may be possible, it is extremely unlikely.

my lights were aimed with the stereo crap in the trunk so that should compensate for that. key word here being should. hell it could be that the dealership that aimed my lights didn't compensate for the car being lowered when aiming using the old target on a wall, who knows.
