Fuel when at E (empty)
Wednesday, November 30, 2005 4:45 AM
I just want to know how much km (or miles) can I drive when the gauge says my fuel tank is near empty ? (when the icon on the board lights up)

i wouldn't test this theory to much, just buy the damm gas
letting your tank go bone dry can't be good for the car
i wouldn't think more than 20 or 30 kilometers

i think you have like 10 miles once the light comes on. its not good for the car to get that low on gas

Not only is this taking chances, but it is INCREDIBLY hard on your fuel pump. I would never run the car below 1/4 tank just for that reason.

yea, not a good idea at all. i did with my old car, it forever to crank again. JUST GET GAS. i understand that it happens sometimes it happens(which was my situation). when i got my aftermarket gauges, i set my fuel needle forward a little so when i do get low, i actually have more gas than what says. when i fill up, it passes the line a small bit

why are you waitin that long anyway

I will tell you from knowledge of mechanics and he doom of my mother-in-law, it is a bad idea to run your car below 1/4th of a tank of gas. On new vehicles that have in tank fuel pump, the fuel in the tank is what actually lubricates the pump itself. so constantly running on little fuel will quickly burn up your pump which is not cheap to replace, nor is it much fun to replace if you plan to do it yourself. Just happy to have my Cavi back after letting the mother-in-law us it for about 8 months. She ragged it hard.

My experience has been that i can get 30 - 40 miles when the light comes on. I don't do it all the time, just when I don't have a choice. I can tell you from experience do not wait until the absolute last minute because you will think you have more gas in your car than you think, but your car will tell you otherwise.

I went through this earlier in the year when my car died on me and my needle read quarter tank. I thought I had that quarter tank and when I got to the light to turn...my car told me otherwise. I ended up have to pay near $800 to get my fuel pump and associated parts replaced. Getting that extra 10 miles or so sometimes isn't worth it.

once i get close to E my needle jumps back up to full for some reason. Thats the when I make it a point to fill up whenever I let it get that low.

I've went 33 miles highway from the time I saw the light come on, you know you're low on gas when your 12 gal. tank takes 13 over 13gal...

you could get about 25-30 miles or so. I know its not good, but sometimes you have no choice or your so damn lost cant even find a gas station. Both situations suck

Psst... plastic tanks (2000+) are 14 gallons

I've run mine dry... it goes a LONG TIME... like 80 kms on the highway.

I got 693 kms to one tank on my way to the 2001 bash. We died just outside of Sault Ste Marie at 2am.

Well it's natural that manuals get better gas mileage than automatics.

Well i'll dispell the myth that running low on gas makes your fuel pump go out sooner.. it doesn't.
Have any of you actually even changed a fuel pump?? If you look at it, you'll see that the gas is siphoned out of the bottom and flows upwards out of the top of the pump. The only time gas isn't flowing through the pump is when you run out. There is also a return line inside of the fuel pump housing that keeps the fuel pump housing full of gas at all times. Enjoy the mythbusting!!

Wait some of you have a light that tells u when ur low on fuel? Crap my gas gauge doesnt work.. maybe thats why it doesnt light up? I always urge to fill up when i have my Trip set, to about 200miles.. In the cold is the worst time to even let ur gas get that low.. i always try and have half a tank anyway..but pretty much just drive city, so if my car is ever low a gas station isnt to far..

We left Thunder Bay at 7pm... should have topped up in Marathon (like the NAME wasn't a HINT, geez...)... ran out of gas just outside of Sault Sainte Marie at 2 in the morning... there was NOTHING open. My buddy had a jerry can in his car, just enough to get both cars to the first Petro Canada in Sault Sainte Marie... good times

I usually try and fill up when its in the Yellow, ive had some of the Check Gauges lights before in the past, ran it out once, wouldnt want to do that again.. IIRC arent the Pre 2000 Metal tanks the ones that hold about 15 gallons?

Re: Fuel when at E (empty)

According to my manual... 95-99 (metal) tanks are 15.2 gallons or 57.5 litres. And 2000-05 tanks (plastic) are 14.1 gallons or 53.4 litres.

Hmm... maybe I should switch tanks... heh.
