Possible stupid question
Thursday, December 29, 2005 7:05 AM
With a 97' Pontiac Sunfire 2.4L Engine, we have the boots over the spark plugs rather that convensional wires. If one wanted to buy a compression tester, is there a specialized on to use on cars with these type of boots?

Or maybe I am thinking of this wrong, while doing a compression test do the other cylinders have to fire or would simply cranking the engine be enough?

Thanks for the help.

On a compression test the spark plug is replace with the tester. No need for boots. Just take the cover off. Take the boots off. Take out one plug (you could take them all out if you wanted, but I would rather keep them in to keep debris out) and plug the tester into that spark plug hole. DISABLE the ignition by unpluging the wires that go in the side of the cover. Crank the engine threee - five times and red tester. Press the button on the side of the tester gauge to relese the pressure. Take it out of the hole and move to the next hole.

Thank you. I guess I was under the impression that the other cylinders had to be firing to get an accurate reading.

Thanks!

I always remove the other plugs too. That way when the engine is cranking you can count the revolutions by when the cranking slows briefly. That way you KNOW when your on the compression stroke.

Word of advice.....Make sure the engine is cool. A hot or even warm engine can damage the little valve in the tester. I speak from experence on this one

Good Luck.

Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
