I'd just keep tabs on the belts during every oil change and/or replace them according to your manuals specs. As far as cleaning the engine, I use a watered down bottle of Meguires quick detail and a rag.

What do you mean "other belts". What other belts does your car on it. There is one accessory belt, and the fan is eletric motor driven is it not?

Rob i think you may have something on that because i have an 04 with the ecotec 2.2 and as far as i know i have just the one belt, the small serpentine belt and if i am not mistaken it runs the entire gammit so to speak.

Yes, one belt controls everything, closes thing to another belt would be the timing chain.....which you replace when it breaks. If I'm correct which I beleive I am, our cars are NOT interference engines. This means if the timing chain were to break, vavles wouldn't hit pistons, push rods wouldn't bend, but the timing chain would probably need to be replaced. For a car with 93,000 miles, if you want to keep it a while with minimum problems:Change the coolant, tonight, it's not hard, A trans flush might be a good idea if it's an auto,(if not, don't worry about it) and a fuel injection cleaning done the right way will yeild better performance. By the right way I do NOT mean those cheap bottles you buy at autozone, the right way. Those bottles do nothing but dissapate through way too much gas in your tank. They do nothing.

Joe i think your mistaken on the timing chain issue, as far as i know the 2.2 ecotec is an interference design engine which would mean when the chain breaks the pistons and valves would smash into one another and do a ton of damage to the engine if not destroy it beyond repair. I Think Shifted mentioned this one time before

pretty sure thats right...

as for the engine cleaning though...i used a can of "blaster engine degreaser" and a high pressure hose attachment. came out sparkling. just bagged my intake filter and alternator.
