Brand new, and I need advice.

Hello all, i am new to the forum, and I have a few questions that I would really appreciate help on.

I have a 97 Sunfire Convertible, with a 2000 engine and automatic transmisssion. It's up over 100k miles, and recently I have developed two problems that i need to see if I can fix myself, because I can't spare my baby to the shop, I need her to get to work.

The first problem is starting; I can drive around town all day, say for running errands 5-10 miles or so, starting and stopping, and no problem. If I drive over thirty miles or so, then shut her off, she will not start. The engine does not turn over, the solenoid does not strike, the accessories do not interrupt. The first couple of times the problem happened, a jump would start the car, now that does not work. Sometimes running the shifter back and forth through the run lets it start, but that's rare. When this happens, the car will not start for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, then starts right up. I have had the battery and charging system checked, they check out. I am thinking starter solenoid, but a mechanic I talked to said it could be the Neautral safety switch or coolant sensor or thermostat. Does anyone have any ideas?

The second is the lights. My day lamps aren't working with the headlight switch off, the daylamp indicator in the dash is flashing on and off; when I turn the headlights on, the day lamps come on instead of the headlights. I figure it is the switch, but I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem before I buy a new switch.

I will appreciate any ideas or advice you all can offer me.

Neautral safety switch
would be where i'd start with the not starting thing, there's nothing a thermostat or coolant sensor would do to keep the engine from running. with your headlights, did you buy the car new? if not, then someone may have bootched a drl (daytime running light) disable, or you could have a bad headlight bulb.
