How much gas does idling use up?
Wednesday, January 24, 2007 7:24 AM
Snowed a couple times and I left my car running for maybe 30 minutes on idle (have to drive to school at about 7am, so about 6:30 turned it on and took my shower etc). I'm curious how much gas idling uses up? A friend of mine told me a lot, but I can't image so since it's just sitting there? I have a 2000 pontiac, 2.2L ohv

not much to notice in 30 mins

not much, but you should be worried about the damage being done to the engine rather than the gas it consumes. Engines are designed to have the vital fluids (engine, tranny fluid) to be constantly running through the car internal parts. When the car is sitting, the fluid don't make it to all the chambers of the engine or tranny thus wearing it pre-maturely. You should avoid idleing the car for more than you need to.

When it's idling, you get 0 mi/gal. Not very good gas mileage, huh? LOL

And no, your engine isn't gonna go out if you let it idle. It's actually better to let your car idle and warm up before you start to drive it. That way all the fluids are warmed up, and freely flowing through your motor, before you start to go into higher RPM's. I dunno what the this David dude is talking about. Since when do all the fluids not get to you entire engine when idling?!?!?! If that were the case, you would start to spin bearings if oil didn't get there IMMEDIATELY! Think about it...wow..

Premature engine wear because of idling...ridiculous..

^^^funny x2 i'd rather let my car idle so the oil can reach the valve train and other components of importance then just starting it up and driving. i'm not a fan of 'dry starts'

People say that what doesn't kill you in this life
will make you stronger. I'm not sure if that is true
or not, but i do know one thing-You have to learn from
it and it has to make you better.......it has to.......

Unless your car is running abnormally rich during idle the amount of gas you're using during idle is so minuscule I wouldn't worry about it.

I'll admit I'm also pro-idle-warmup, but it seems like David is not the only one that thinks idling can harm an engine:

I had to laught at this paragraph in that article:

"There's another good reason for motorists to drive away soon after starting a vehicle. The engine is only one component of a vehicle. Other parts, such as the wheel bearings, steering, suspension, transmission and tires, also need to be warmed up, and the only way to do that is to get the vehicle moving."

That makes no sense at all. What does that have to do with leaving your car idling?!?! It's kinda like saying the only way to drink milk is to pick up the glass, put it to your mouth, and drink it. No @!#$ sherlock!

what has this world come to

Displacement= 2.2L
Valve Train= OHV
Bore & Stroke= 3.50 x 3.46
Compression Ratio= 9 to 1
Net HP @ RPM= 125 @ 5200
Maximum Torque Ft Lbs @ RPM= 135 @ 4000
Fuel System= MFI
Normal Oil Pressure: psi @ 3000 RPM= 56

I can see where idling excessively is a problem, like in a patrol car or taxi cab. Most service guides suggest more frequest oil and filter changes under those conditions -- but for that article I linked to basically recommend starting and pulling away... Thats going to leave a lot of people wondering why their low-mileage engine has let go when floored it on a -20 degree morning.

I really hope you're joking.. cuz if not.. wow

News Flash! Idling is not good for your engine

what a load of environmentalist propoganda bull@!#$.

Quote:

Step 1: Reduce warm-up idling to 30 seconds. Start driving after no more than 30 seconds of idling. Avoid high speeds and rapid acceleration for the first five kilometres or so to allow all moving parts of your vehicle to warm up.

what they fail to mention is that fluids like oil change viscosity with different temperatures. Cold oil is thick hard to move oil, and lubrication suffers because of such. 30 seconds is not enough time for oil to reach normal viscosity

Quote:

Step 2: If you are going to be stopped for more than 10 seconds, turn your engine off (except in traffic). Idling your vehicle for more than 10 seconds uses more fuel than it would take to restart your engine.

and add extra wear on electrical components such as batteries and starters.

Quote:

Step 3: Avoid using a remote car starter. These devices encourage you to start your vehicle before you are ready to leave, which means unnecessary idling.

Step 4: When the temperature drops below 0°C, consider using a block heater to warm your vehicle"s engine before you start it. This will reduce engine wear, improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions from your vehicle. An automatic timer can be used to turn on the block heater two hours or so before you plan to start the vehicle.

Step 5: Spread the word to your family and friends. Telling your family and friends about the benefits of reduced idling will help them save money and help protect the environment too.

step 6: ignore this list.

idling does not consume much fuel. cold start up however, does during warm-up enrichment but it is necessary especially in cold weather to let fluids and parts reach an acceptable operating temperature before moving.

i start mine in the morning before i scrape off the car. it only takes a few min to clean off my car(for some reason it doesn't get garage privileges) but IMO a few mins is long enough.
