Getting More HP out of a 2200?
Monday, October 29, 2007 2:23 PM
Hey guys, I've new to the j-body site and I am trying to improve my sunfire. I'm not looking to make it the fastest car out there or really even one of the fastest. I have a 1999 Sunfire 2200 OHV Coupe with the following mods, most of them are general apperance in nature but am currently trying to increase performance and horsepower. I am in the process of building a custom turbo kit (Garret t3/t4, Spearco Intercooler, Greddy Blowoff Valve), I was wondering what PSI should I run my turbo kit at? I would love to reach 250-300 horsepower if possible, so if you guys know of any other mods that would help me reach my goal please let me know. I appreciate your help, thanks for viewing.

1999 Sunfire SE Coupe 2200 OHV- 115hp
Upgraded Stereo Speakers- Crappy Insignia CD Player with MP3, CD-R Compatibility
Sony Xplod 6x9 3-way 400W 100w RMS
Sony Xplod 6.5 4-way 220W
Pioneer 6.5 4-way 260W
Ati Racing- Blitz Bodykit (Fitment was ok, had to custom fit sideskirts pretty badly)
M3 Style Mirrors with LED Turn Signals
Carbon Fiber Spoiler
Upgraded Rectangle Turn Signals from 99 to 2002 Round Front (Didnt fit perfect for bulb insertion but not bad)
Reverse El Glow Gauges
AEM Cold Air Intake with ByPass Valve
Motegi 16" Rims MR7
Megan Catback Exhaust

you can run 8-10 psi on a stock motor. 12-15 on a built motor. 8-10 will put u at 285hp at the wheels. and about mid 13s in the quarter

8-10 will put him at 200 to the wheels, tops, and the motor won't last long there.

Ive said it before and i'll say it again and i know some people might hate me for it but the 2200 is a piece of @!#$. A single cam motor sucks...and dont say with a turbo kit it'll be fast cause any motor could be fast with a turbo kit. Just swap out that LN2 for a LD9 or L61 which both are DOHC motors. And also changing the oil filter on that dam motor sucks.

READ THE BOOST FORUM STICKY

But, in all truth-- If you have the cash, build up the motor and boost it. A strong build and boost could put you at 250.

An Ecotec would be a great motor to build on, and boosting a stock 2200 is sketchy at best. a mild build would be recommended at 8-10psi. If I had the money, which i don't..... A awesome build on a 2200 and 18psi of boost would be a dream to me. Someday i want to have a 300whp 2200....just to show the haters.

ha, thats a good one but true. Well it all started when i was working as a tech at walmart changing oil and tires and other stuff. And for some odd reason everytime I had something very important to do after work our last cars were jbodys. which is great but then we pop the hood and its a dam 2200. Taking off that oil filter is a bitch and just imagine a sunfire and cav in every bay with the 2200. It took longer to close up shop and i was always late for my dates. But besides that is a SOHC

Most high horsepower V8's are single cam pushrod OHV engines.

The 2.2/2200 really isn't a great hp engine, but grouping all single cam OHV engines into the "sucks" category is a bit uncalled for.

the oil filter is cake to do. pop off the passenger side tire and you can reach it right from right there. very simple.

i agree with what shifted said, alot of v8s ohv. whats wrong with one cam also ?
Re: Getting More HP out of a 2200?

yeah cause the V8 has the displacement to back it up, hell why dont we just go get a single cam 3 cylinder motor from a geo and start modding, cause its stupid just like the dam 2200 is.

yeah but @ work be had the cars parked over lowered gates which we would open and have full access to the bottom of the car. Jacking it up from there would not work but good idea for the home mech.

I get the oil filter off from the top, shove your hand behind the PS pump and next to the Intake Manifold, and youre golden. I just figured out that I could do this too, I was taking the tire off for a LONG time.

2200 FTW!

yeah thats the way we were doing it but most of the time the filter is OVER tighten so its a bitch to get it off.

Had to do them all the time at valvoline, qq. Theres a specific technique to get it from the bottom and otherwise its easier to get from the top.
To boot, the 5-spd is easy as @!#$ (theres nothing blocking access to the filter on the bottom).

Yeah that is true, with the 5speed it is easier. I was lowerbay and a sunfire pulled up and I yelled "ecotec?" "No, 2200" then i reached for the oil filter and I was like wow what happend theres sufficient space.

Where do I start... lol

For one Ive never had a problem with the oil filter, slide under the car and its right there.. if your doing your own oil changes you shouldn't mind getting under the car.

Why spend around a thousand give or take, to do a direct swap to another stock motor. Why not take that thousand and put it into the OHV. I guarantee you it will surprise you with how it performance once you open it up. Stock its restricted as hell. Its not the most common or preferred platform to start with but ANY motor has potential.

The reason it has its bad rep is because people say bad things about it, and "just swap in an eco they are so much better", and everyone just gets that notion. Mind you 90% of these people know NOTHING about the engine *cough cough* SOHC you say? As well as MOST of the people that do the ecotec swaps, could have put that money into the OHV and got the same results if not better, for the same amount of money.

I love it. Its easy to work on. Its cheaper. Its a solid engine.

Someone who does their research, can make a very respectable OHV.

I unfortunately do not have dyno numbers, or track slips since i installed my turbo/race head on my OHV but it proved to me it has alot in it, and a lot more to go, and i have barely dug into the project im planning.

My suggestion... read read read and research everything you can get ur hands on.

Yes cause you boosted your little 2200, but as a N/A motor is not worth the trouble.

that should make it even easier though. the only reason i take the tire off is because i cant get under the car enough with it on to get it off. if your already under the car, reach up around the flex pipe and its right there. i can see the filter from the top but im not tearing up my arm to get to it

Oil filter is IMO easier on the 2200 than the eco......unscrew it by hand then shove your pinky finger in the oil filter and pull it up takes around 5 secs.

On the 2200 put alot of time and money into the head....the head flows horribly but is rather easy to take care of, get it p&ped and some 1.6 rockers, different valve springs and 1mm ss valves and the head will flow nicely.

I've been in some snappy LN2 cars...... sure they don't compare to my LD9 when it comes to ruining tires..... but they arn't bad engines by any means... they actually serve thier intened purpose better.. I'de actually like to have one as a daily / winter car.... since I cant give my sunfire more than 1/4 throttle without lighting the tires up in the winter (first gear)... and the LN2's are known to go a lot longer without having to replace things.
