Anytime I go from neutral to reverse, you can hear a grinding noise, but once its in reverse it stops.
Its just a grinding right before it pops into reverse gear.
Also, sometimes I have to more or less "pop" it out of second gear.
Like the gear wont let go of the stick.
And it makes a "pop" sound when it goes out of gear.
But only if I started in 1st gear, if I started it in 2nd, there is no problem.
Speaking of 2nd gear..
No matter how I do it, the clutch slips when going into 2nd gear.
Just from going to 1st to 2nd gear.
Sometimes, when you first start the car and let go of the clutch(in neutral)
You can hear a very faint "ping", and if you press in the clutch, it stops.
Sometimes it'll start again, sometimes it'll stay quiet.
At first I thought it was coming from the engine,
but you can only hear it from inside the car.
And lastly.. not a problem, but a question.
Is it ok to start in 2nd gear, or will I ruin something by not starting in 1st?

It's okay to start in second gear, it just wears your clutch down more quickly.
alrght thanks.
Anyone else about the other questions?
I'm a newbie here, only been driving straight for less than a week.
Just had a new engine and clutch put in.
It has less than 600 miles on the motor.

I was thinking while driving earlier, I don't think its the clutch thats griding when I go into reverse, as the clutch is released before I put it into reverse.
So what else could grind? the transmission?
Its a short sound, maybe a second or less, just as you put the shifter into reverse.

Start you car with your foot on the brake, car in neutral and seatbelt on (stops the ding ding ding) when you take you foot off your brake... is that when you here this 'ping' and does it sound like its electronic like almost like its from the speakers? if so it has something to do with the ABS brakes engaging or checking something like that.
If thats not what your talking about and I am way way off then i am sorry and maybe try to explain it in a different way and see if i cant take another stab at it.lol
I have one true love in my life...And my girlfriend sits next to me in it
The ping is more than likely your throw out bearing. Its pretty common if you have the Isuzu transmission. They are also known to grind going into reverse.

the clutch should be pushed in and the car in reverse already before you release the clutch
Mine does that too when i go into reverse.
What i have done to beat it is go into from 1st to reverse. and when you are in in the nutral position all the way to the right, pull down until you feel it stop. SLOWLY let out the clutch while applying pressure to the shifter and it will engage without grinding.
I have no idea why that works.
I'm back from the dead.
Currently Driving: RSX Type-S.
My Cavalier Burnt up :-(
Mine grinds too if I go straight into reverse. I do something similar to Wil. Here's what I do:
Holding clutch in, put shifter in 4th.
Still holding clutch in, take shifter out of 4th and put it in reverse.
I don't think it matters which gear you put it in first. I just use 4th because the motion is simpler.
It'll get to be a habit before long. You won't even know you're doing it.
A lot of cars are pissy when going into reverse because reverse gear isn't usually synchronized.... it's normal.... try letting out the clutch and pressing it back in again.
If your clutch is slipping and your hearing a ping sound.... you might have a broken spring on your pressure plate.
The grinding noise is your reverse gear in your tranny. Dont force it into gear, you'll only damage the gears more. If it doesnt go in the first time, let the clutch out and try again.
The Saab that my family has does the same thing when going into reverse, but only if it's still rolling forward. I have no problems with it on my Cavalier, I just throw it into reverse whenever the hell I feel like it and it does a good job of getting there. The Saab though... first time it happened I thought I broke something, lol.
Anyone in here know what double clutching is??
Well in old cars that didn't have their gears synchronized you had to clutch in, go to neutral, let clutch out, then push it back in, then put it in gear, then let clutch out again to continue.. Big trucks are still like this..
Basically what double clutching does is get the transmission spinning with the speed of the car.. Soo the next time you're about to throw it in reverse.. Try double clutching.. clutch slippage?? DOUBLE CLUTCH.. hah.. it'll help i promise.. Not to mention it's less wear and tear on your transmissions components.. And if i didn't explain it good enough.. Google it..

Yes i alteast know what double clutching is. It wasnt bought up because the most common transmissions are constant mesh, instead of splined gears. All constant mesh transmissions have syncronizers that elemiate the need to double clutch. With constant mesh transmissions 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, etc are always syncroed. 1st and reverse and be either, constant mesh or spline gears. Splined gears Is what JBoii is talking about w/ double clutching. Double clutching has no benifit what so ever with a constant mesh transmission.
