Indiglo Gauge overlay electrical prob. Help?
Wednesday, April 23, 2008 5:44 PM
HI, Bought an indiglo gauge overlay for the gauge cluster and the HVAC panel. Both have worked great so far. But now the one for the gauges Flickers sometimes and fades....... .. .. out sometimes. Took dash back apart and double checked connections. All are tight and hooked up to proper sources.(black ground-Beige in harness power). Could there be a resistor problem with the indiglo kit itself? It does come with its own dimmer control- color changer, and little black box transformer thing um a jig. Also noticed at idle Both indiglos lightly flicker, once rpm's go up they light steady. Any clues out there??/??? its bugging the crap out of me?!

The way you have explained it sounds like a drain during idling (like a sound system) but you stated that it worked perfectly before and works when rpms are up. Kinda tricky. I'll try to look into it.

Thanks for the response. It doesn't happen only at idling, but also while normal driving. Also i do not have a sound system in my car. Just the regular old GM head unit. When the gauges do go out all i have to do is move the dimmer switch up and down a little as to change the brightness and the indiglo comes right back on full brightness. Im really starting to think that there might be a problem with that resistor/transformer that comes with the gauges. If so is there a way i could delete that out and hook it up to regular 12V? or can i go to radio shack and find something to replace it with? (" if it is that resistor/transformer thing.")

ok. Think i narrowed the problem. Read on other forums and by using a godly devise such as google "GASP!" i determined that the power converter for the indiglows is shot. i have a good ground and good constant power. Every problem traces back to that power converter though. So my dillema now is should i buy another indiglo kit? - Wire it into my pre-existing HVAC overlay? - or attempt to fabricate a replacement from radio shack or such? Does anybody know of a way to make one? Its probably based on the same power applications for LED"s correct? Smaller electrical devise does not require full 12V? Any insight Would be much appreciated. I apologize if this should be in the electronics forum. Didn't know i would have such a problem with it.

Good idea! But actually i found a replacment transformer and dimmer assembly on Autodynamic.com about $15. not too bad! Things are looking brighter after all! Thanks to all.
