Pics of Play'n in the Dirt

I finally got the digital camera out again and wanted to post some pictures of my car as the racing season comes to an end.

Not trying to be redundant but my dad and I race at La Raceway in LaMonte, Missouri. The track is a 3/8 mile clay oval with slight banking. Hobby Stock is American made, FWD, only 2 valves/cylinder (Cavi, Sunfire, Sunbird, Shadow, Daytona, Escort...) The real racing picture is from 9/9/05 and I placed third (I beat those other two cars in the picture

My dad got ahold of the camera so somehow I am in a couple picts, but tell me what you think of the car and visit La Raceway for stats and more info.

My cardomain page is terribly out-of-date and I'm going to try to revamp it later this week if I can find the time.

Car looks good...

I like the two valve rule.... The 2nd gen J's must be pretty comptetive with that rule.

How's the car handle?

My car is a '93 2.2 5-speed with a newer, lower mileage motor and it runs great. It is totally gutted of all extra weight so there really is not a dash, inner door panels or rear inner quarters, the hood and the trunk are skinned out too. There is a full roll cage and 5 gal. fuel cell. The only mod I have (and that is legal for the track) is a locked front-end so I am turning both wheels all the time instead of the open differential. I have Fiero wheels on it right now because they are wide (wider than standard GA and Sunbird high-tech turbo wheels), cheap, and look good.

My dad's car was a 1991 Pontiac Grand Am with a 2.5 Iron Duke 5-speed. His has a freshly rebuilt motor in it and it runs great. I can out run him on the straights but he gets me in the corners. His is a lot tighter on the corner and has less body roll. He is number 19 and I am 21. However, he was involved in a major pile-up week before last so really there is no car left. We are in the process of putting all the components (cage, motor, trans, fuel cell) into his parts car (90 GA 5 speed).

Oh, and I must admit my mistake...at the top in that racing picture, I didnt beat the Sunfire #124. He got first, a 1999 Cavi came in second, I got third, and the #54 Cavi got fourth. The next couple were Fords so we wont talk about them. There are about 35-40 of these Hobby Stock cars out there every Friday (we split into two features) so this is a pretty cool thing around here.

Everyone out there runs in third gear and down the straights I saw about 70-72 or so (hard to pay attention to that) I dont have a tach so I cant tell you the rpm but I know the upshift light is goin nuts!

For a long time everyone really wanted a 1986-1990 Escort GT with the 1.9 HO motor, and they handle very well (dad had one last season) but the J-bodys rule out there now. There are about 5 out there that are Cavalier/Sunfire 2.2 5-speeds that are 1997 or newer with less than 70,000 miles. A few drivers have the hook up and get salvage cars and fix them up to drive them. My chassis has like 215,000 on the clock (not the motor though). One of the new cars is a 2000 with 32,000!

Another interesting point to mention is that as of right now (9/16/05) the top ten looks like this, car wise:

1. Sunfire
2. 3rd gen Cavi
3. 1990 Grand Am 2.5
4. Sunfire
5. 1993 Shadow
6. 1988 Escort GT
7. 1987 Escort GT
8. 2nd gen Cavi (Michael)
9. 1988 Escort GT
10. EXP

Pretty good representation of J's dont you think?

You should have no issues with a third gen J ... too heavy.... The beauty of an OBD I Jcar, no rev limiter..... I rev'd my 2.2 OHV passed 7K all the time.... Port the intake, freshen the bottom end, and cut the head!... You need TORQUE on the dirt... and a posi off the corners.......

Beware of those Mazda powered Escorts GT's..... cheatin rascals....... they weigh nothing and make "just enough" power without much tweaking....
