i want to know if my setup will be alright to use in auto-x this summer.im just getting into the sport and need your opion. ive got 18inch icon rims wrapped in nankang rubber, vibrant front sturt mount bar, and ive got an eibach anti-roll kit and . gravana coil-over system by b&g on its way. my car is a 98 2200 auto. thanks for all the feedback guys.
well 2200 means no power, 2200 with an automatic means you might as well get out and run, it will be faster, 2200 Auto w/ heavy ass 18's = not even worth going IMO
get some azenis 612's and a pair od alot smaller alot lighter wheels and you will at least have some fun
I would ditch the 18" wheels if at all possible. They are too heavy for competition use. A set of like 15" or 16" wheels will work much better, but if you don't have the funds just go out and have fun.
Keep in mind, the more upgrades you put on the car, the more the car will cover your driving mistakes. This statement is ESPECIALLY true with racing tires. Learning on Azenis would be one of the worst things you could do. Being a 2200 and an automatic are definitely two strikes against you, but that doesn't mean you wont be somewhat competitive. I PAX'd 27/78 cars this past Sunday and took 2nd place in my class-- lost to a Datsun 510 that I had beat up until the last run with my '97 2.2 auto. The track was still wet when my class ran, so I'm sure I could have PAX'd higher if my hoosiers weren't going through puddles and never reaching operating temperature.

. Go out and have a good time and just try to absorb as much from others as you can. Ride with as many people as possible and take an instructor with you on your runs.
darkstars doesnt bother me, im not out to make a career out of it. if i was i wouldnt be in a j, im lokking for some fun. besides if i do want to pursue more im going to get a newer z/ls sport or fire gt. but thanks for the input guys. right now ill have to run the 18's until i get ahold of a set of z rims at a good price.
im joining the local scca chapter, so that should help right? what size are the rims in your sig zach?

That is the right attitude to have. Learn how to drive first , then worry about the car second. I think driving a crappy car that was completely stock with lousy tires helped me ramp up my skills quicker than some others with already modded cars.

that is why i kinda want to get a beater to race next year instead of racing the sunfire

no he is right lol, not to seem like a dick or anythign but i had a 2000 cavalier with the 2200 with an auto. i had 17's and it was slow as balls. i even had full suspension, exhaust, intake, and brakes. i was better off riding a 10 speed. i am glad you have the attitude you have because thats what it takes to race Auto x. if i were you i would pick up some stock steelies, throw some Falken Azenis on there and call it a day. you will most likely be in the STS class and if so i would reccommend aftermarket brakes for sure. get some powerslots and hawk pads. they are a great combo. other than that go out have fun. and walk the course a few time before you even run. its a great sport to get into and a huge addicition, you will be wanting to know when the next race is every time you are done. im glad i upgraded to the eco, its faster and handles the power band a lot better. there are a lot of people there that will help you out when racing.

I think everyone has there good points. The best thing to do is HAVE FUN! I am getting back into autocross after being out two years. I learned to drive Auto-X with a 99 Escort ZX2. It was bone stock auto. I currently have a 2004 Cavalier Sedan Auto with Koni adjustables, 22mm rear sway bar, lowering springs, and soon to have upper strut tower bars front and rear.
I learned alot the first year. Take the rookie course if they offer it. Ask the veterans for tips and help. I found here in STL that they are willing to help. Just make sure not to bug them during there runs. Walk to course. Get there early to get your car ready and to use all the time to walk the course and talk to the veterans.
Your current setup is not bad. I run stock wheels with Azenis. Other then that if you have any other questions you can e-mail me or hit me up on MSN Messenger.

thanks alot guys, ive been reading on the detriot scca chapter page and it says to walk the course, if anybody in this post is from mi. id like to meet up this summer and learn a few things. ill be at the meet in ohio in late june if any of you will be there. but thanks for the advice, also i know my car i super slow but it will work for now.
i'll probably be to at least 1 detroit event this year. look for a red sunfire, it'll be the only one there

i learned to autocross in an F Street Prepared Volkswagen Rabbit GTI. My dad has built it from the ground up for one thing and one thing only...Autocross, and let me tell you, I couldnt have done anything dumber....that car drove ME at the ripe young age of 16 haha.
The best thing you could do is start in a slow car and progress slowly, you will become a better driver. Trust me lol, because when I did run my old 2.2 Sunfire I made a fool of myself because I didnt have a car that would correct my mistakes for me. My dad knew that would be the case which is why he made me do it haha.
Now, I run a '05 CRG Road Rebel with a 125cc Rotax strapped to it....and I pretty much base my racing schedule on whether or not someone else will be there that day to give a run at beating me. It's FAST and now that I've learned how to drive it's even better.
Basically, incase you didnt get it in my ramblings haha, what I'm saying is keep the mindset you have...take your car and learn it inside out at the track and you'll thank yourself down the road! You arent going to set the track on fire but I promise by the end of the season, you will be beating some people you didnt think you'd be beating. Personally, there's nothing more gratifying than schooling a 45 year old lawyer in his brand new C6 with my "cute little go kart" hahaha.
Oh and yeah, lose the 18"s, put your stockers back on at least! Let us know how your season progresses!

just go and have fun, but those 18" rims are going to kill your times. Have fun and if you like it then look at getting some smaller rims with better rubber.
