i have a 2002 cavalier , 2.2 automatic, i run at a short circle track. 3/4 down the straight i hit a rev limiter and loose all momentum going in the corner. Does any one know what i can do?

I presume you are running in 2(nd), to keep the rpms up. You are limited to 6000 rpm, the only way to change that is with HP Tuners. Your only other option is to change you gear ratio. If you have a 3 speed TH125C/3T40 read Stock Torque Converters, 3 Speed Gears and more for more info on available gearing. Other gears are available for the 4 speed, 4T40E, I just don't have that information readily available.

find anyone near you with HP Tuners...a lot of shops carry it, it'll only take a few minutes (so i think)

Remember, the HP peek is at 5000 rpm, after that the stock motor's HP drops like a rock! Going beyond the rev limit doesn't result in any more speed at the end of the straightaway. A properly set up chasis and motor should run out of power near the point you should lift to set the car into the corner.

With the TH125C/3T40 that come in the J's you should have the 33(drive)/37(driven) tooth sprockets on the drive chain and a final drive (differential) of 2.84:1 for an effective ratio of 3.18:1. Find a transmission (see link above) with the 35/35 tooth drive chain and the 3.08:1 FD for a little more drive going into the corner. It won't pull quite as hard off the corner, but you should pull further down the straights.

up shift

My car may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
JBO lube - they would never have enough in stock and we'd never see RodimusPrime again

UP Shift Yea that would be a good start..but no if you are just racing your car and not using it for street use
you can take you Rev limiter off ..you cant but a shop might do it ..just make sure he is not a law biting shop Guy

And just how would a shop do it that he couldn't? Law abiding or not, the rev limiter is something that's coded into the ecu, it's not just a matter of "cut the blue wire" and you have no rev limiter.

hmmm ..you said it your self Ian Brydon ...there are people that would do it and yes it is coded onto your car, it can be done ..umm yep I did not put all the details of how to do it ,my point was it can be done ..

how big is this track that you're bouncing off the rev limiter in the straights?

What size tires are you running?

Why would anyone pay over a grand on a stand alone ignition for a relatively stock 2.2 ohv, especially mated to an auto 3-speed?

Jack, his is an 02, weren't they all 4t40's by then? Anyway, to the OP, what speed are you at when you hit this limiter? I find it kind of hard to believe that you'd be hitting the 105mph speed limiter on a circle track in a J, but i also don't see you running out of gearing either if you have a 4 speed.

He's hitting the rev limiter, not the speed limiter, so I'm assuming he's trying to stay out of 3rd gear altogether.

How is that going to raise his rev limiter?

Jason, '02 was the last year of the 2.2/2200s and of the 3 speed.

Ian, Daniel was referring to keeping the tranny in 2 and not D to keep the rpms up and keep from shifting into 3rd gear. If you were to try that with the 4 speed the PCM would still shift into the next gear to keep you off the rev limiter.

Just out of curiousity, might be dumb question, but when you have an auto and are manually shifting from 1 to 2 to D, how do you do it? Do you just pop it even with your foot on the gas or do you have to do @!#$ like take your foot off the gas etc? Sorry if dumb question.

I used to do it in my sister's car all the time, just put your foot down and push it from gear to gear. only thing I like about automatics.

^^^ yea... you can let off quick to shift then smash it again. or just smash it and wait for it to shift. Or to find out where the shift points are at smash it and look at the rpm or mph and determine how much more you can push it w/o blowing and loosing power to make you slower from latre shifting. i know nothing! lol

Anyway, try increasing your tire size, which in turn changes your gearing.
