chances of Cobalt SS going Turbo?

hey guys i was just wondering what you guys think of the Chances of the SS going turbo in a few years when they do the whole update of it are ?

as for what me well maybe a 50/50 chance. i think it all depends on how the turbo'ed 2.0's in the Sky and solstice do in reguards to reliability if they fair well then maybe that percentage increases slightly..then again GM is stupid so who knows

so what do you all think

We can only hope!

With the turbo eco in the new soltice gxp it makes you wonder, but the layout and position of the engine is different so who knows if it will fit as well as in that vehicle.

I personally love the supercharger and with the right mods big gains can come from it, but you still can't help but wonder what it would feel like with a turbo,.

All the REALLY FAST eco's are turbo, so it goes to show..........

Don't hold your breath on GM doing this!

There was a rumor floating around about a turbo Cobalt even before the car was out.

I'd say there are 2 chances.

1. Slim.
2. Not at all.

I'd like to see it. Maybe a limited production would be nice. A collectable Cobalt it would be.

The SS/sc has brought resprect from the tuner crowd. I'd like to see some shame.

As much as we all would love to see it, that would never happen .

Well, I guess this thread is good enough for me to use my last post.

A friend of mine who works for GM development told me that a friend of his in GM is currently working on the 2007 Cobalt facelift. This facelift includes slight changes to the exterior styling, and also changes the engine to the 2.0 turbo eco. Yes, it kinda surprises me too, since the s/c has had great success. But as of now, he says that yes the 07 will be turbo.

Does kinda surprise me though, so I guess we'll see if what my friend says pulls through. And knowing GM, this very well could be pushed back to 08-09 anyway.

i think GM needs to turbo it, especially to compete with the dodge caliber. 300HP and AWD for the low 20G's, GM wont be able to compete. And the fact of the matter is the supercharger just doesnt make enough power, i mean stage II barely gets the cars into the 13's.

I planned on buying a SS the end of this year or early next year, i hope the turbo version comes out by then.

What's the story on the Caliber anyway? It looks like Honey I Shrunk the Magnum. I learned nothing about it from the commercial other than it looks cool and fairies are vengeful little basteds.

ive always heard the 2.0 s/c was doomed before it even started

and have always heard the turbo will take its place

my guess is they didnt want the saab 2.0T and cobalt to have the same motors , since (my thoughts) it would devalue the saab's , since the motors would be identical

and since the 9-3 has moved up to the V6 turbo now , they can put the 2.0 turbo in cobalt

the saab thing is my twist on GM's thinking

There are no plans for a turbo on Cobalt's future product portfolio. Expect more of a change in 2008 model year.
Also in order the for a AWD to fit, the chassis will have to be a clean sheet design, as there is no room for it. This is not like Focus or Lancer where there is room to have RWD/AWD applications.

someone mentioned something about a next gen cobalt? does anyone have a link where u found/heard about this? around when is it due for production? if its not too far away, it might be a good idea to just buy something like a used tibby or celica for around 8 - 10k instead of buying a brand new SS/SC for 20k, and just waiting for the next gen cobalt and buy it brand new!

Re: chances of Cobalt SS going Turbo?

I would think it shold be due around the 09 model yr, since most cars change gen every 4 -5 yrs (95 - 99 eclipse, 00 - 04, eclipse/ 94 - 99 celica/00 - 04 celica/ 96 - 00 civic, 01 - 05 civic/ etc...) the only car I know of that lasted 10 yrs in the same gen is the cavy.. I hope the same thing doesnt happen with the cobalt. even then the cavy got its phases 95 - 99, and 00 - 02, and 03 - 05. the last phase has the most change, since thast when the engine changed. or maybe around 08 we could get a different cobalt "phase" not a gen change... then in 09, or 2010 the gen will change?

Re: chances of Cobalt SS going Turbo?

well, there are at least two factors that strongly point to a standard-issue turbo engine becoming reality for the SS... one is emissions/fuel economy.... turbo engines with a well matched turbo and oem tuning will always have more mpg per hp than a supercharged or n/a motor.... this is why even BMW and Honda, two companies that literally swore off turbos, are now planning on putting them into production vehicles. Second is competition.... with Dodge putting out an AWD turbo Caliber SRT4, and Subaru with the STI, and Mitsu with the EVO, Chevy simply can't afford to not try and cash in on this market... my only fear is that they may, as usual, be too late. But it does seem that the S/C SS' have been selling pretty well, i see them everywhere, so thats not a terrible sign either... Cross your fingers is all i have to say.

What GM needs to do is to put out a brand-new, hi-tech with future potential chassis and not just "update" and continue on a platform that the rest of the world has seen duty since 1991. GM has the resources, brains, and dreams now it is a matter of execution.
As of now, Ion's replacement will debut in late 2007 as a 2008 model (no more polymer panels too) and GM is saying it will be mostly badge engineering of the new Opel Astra. The question here is will this new Astra will really be "brand new."
I'll keep you all posted.

The Calibre SRT4 is not AWD it's FWD. The AWD Calibre is the slower one.

Using the eco turbo in the Cobalt SS makes a lot of sense for GM, I'd be surprised if they didn't do it. But, knowing GM glacial speed at doing things I wouldn't hold my breath.

you know what, ive been thinking and there wont be a turbo 2.0 anytime soon in the Cobalt. Y? because for one the LSJ Cobalt seems to be selling pretty good since i see them almost everywhere. Also its only 1 year old, i doubt GM would spend all the money to develope and produce the LSJ only to cancel it so shortly after it goes into production. Like any car/Engine, things will change over time. Im sure when the Cobalts LSJ slows down heavily in sales, like it 2009 or beyond and gas really starts to cost your first born, then they will turbo it with a diesel or G85 fuel.

Also look at it this way, GM just released its stage upgrade packages. That is GMs attack on the 4 cylinder FI war. Although its kinda like bringing a knife to a sword fight, they are one the right path. And as we have seen, the LSJ is a very capable engine. I wouldnt be suprised if by this time next year they release a stage III and the cobalts are running mid 13's.

my guess is if they WERE going to turbo it, it wouldnt be for a few years. I'm sure they've thought of it, they need to see how the turbo eco works out in the solstice/sky first IMO

for some of you that dont know already

but there is a cobalt that has ran 12's , i believe with a 2.8 pulley , but it might have been a 2.6

x2.

and theres no efing way that gm will do it either. no way they would make a cobalt turbo from the factory that will cost in the 20k when the camaro is "suppose" to come back or compete with a BASE corvette.

incase you guys forgot.. the cobalt is still somewhat of an entry car. the vette being ther "super car"

subie and mitsu both have the evo and sti with are both their "supercar"

and as far as the cobalt sits now... it competes with the srt 4... while the viper compres to the vette.

i dont see gm doin that anytime soon. and with the evo 9 or 10 coming out (idk what the new one is) the price on that is probley mid to high 30k
no way gm is gonna waste that kind of money in their entry car.

hell look at the new civic SI's... the start at like what 20k? an "entry" level car. thats wrx or rsx price range. and the mitsu eclipse.... its almost as high as the evo.
