The GF has been looking for something newer and cheaper to drive, as the GTP is starting to show it's age. The gas mileage is getting really bad, there are tonnes of new noises that are getting really annoying, it will need both mufflers replaced very soon. It all adds up to getting another car I think.
She has been looking at bigger cars, like grand prix, and Impala, but she has always liked VWs and we came across this one the other day...
2003 Jetta TDI
What does everyone think? Would this be a good way to go?

extended warnety from a good dealer is a must for those cars. hence i will never own one.
I don't know about the quality of Jettas but I will say that a friend of mine has had her 2002 VW Jetta GLS 1.8T for about 2 years now and she's had absolutely no problems with it. It's a pretty fun car to ride in too.
Diesel is the only way to go when buying German.

only thing is there more expensive to fix when they break down
So, since we don't have a VW dealer around here, and my long time mechanic is more of a domestic guy, I should avoid this car?
Thanks for the replies.

True, IF you commute long distance the fuel alone MORE then out pays itself for any maintenance. AND I find even the Mk4 Jetta diesels to be pretty reliable.

I give up...
i'm buying a VW those people love trees, so they should love eachother too... "Andy"
Jetta's are built in Mexico. If you want the best possible description of their quality. Imagine a car as reliable as a Hyundai but as expensive to fix as a Toyota.
Then again, this is just my experience with the 1993-1998 Jettas talking. Maybe they've gotten better lately. Up until 1992 this wasn't the case. A Diesel Jetta/Golf was indestructible back then, but it's those Mexican made Mk.3 cars. Quality took a huge drop. I dunno man. If you really wanna save, buy a cheap and reliable car like a Civic or Corolla and drive it into the ground. What's the point of paying 3-4 thou more for a car so you can save 3-4 thou on gas over it's lifetime? Might as well just save 5-6 thou on the Honda or Toyota and pay a little more for gas.
Thats not completely true... some are mexico cars, some are German cars.

I cannot agree more.
MK4's are really plagued with a lot of issues. The earlier the worse.
I have slaved over my g/f's 2000 2.0 many nights. Her brother has one, and my brothers girlfriend has one as well. They all have the same problems. Anything from the oil burning 2.0 from backwards piston rings to the over engineered window regulators shattering windows when shutting the doors.

Toyotas aren't expensive to fix. the name you're looking for is BMW.

when it comes to VW, better believe this guy. in VW, this man is baby Jesus
tree huggers love em to convert them to burn vegetable oil or bio diesel.... Kits are expensive, but when you apparently average it out a gallon of diesel is only costing you 9 cent a gallon. Only have to use it on start up it starts to look real nice.
