The real kick in the balls is that Goverment doesn't want to bail any of the big 3 out. I guess only pencil pushers and scumbags in suits are the only cogs the senate cares about.
um, people buy imports because for many years they have proven to be a sound investment. solid build quality, reliability, benchmark materials, better than average resale value...just to name a few.
Domestics have only recently made better cars, but it took for them to go nearly bankrupt to get motovated to do it. I say too, little too late.
Chrysler built the biggest peices of sh*t, so they deserve to go down in my opinon. At least GM is putting up a fight. Survival of the fittest in the business world, Chrysler put themselves in the corner and has nobody else to blame.
Don't complain about people buying imports, we work hard for our money and deserve a quality car. I'd gladly support domestic big 3 if they respected the consumer and built something worth investing $$$ in.

I hate to say it, but Jooky's right. As much as I hate losing Chrysler, the reality is that they made crap cars. Every manufacturer that has ever died off has the made the exact same mistake every time. From AMC to British-Leyland to Rover to now possibly Chrysler. They made crap quality cars.
Why are Toyota and Honda seen as better than GM or Ford? Because they make better quality cars, and with the internet word gets around. I'll grant you that GM has made huge strides in Quality and Toyota/Honda have actually become more brittle, but that still doesn't change the fact that for now, a Honda or Toyota is a better investment.
Besides, what's gonna make America poorer? 300,000 people a year having to change their five year old cars because they've self-destructed or a total of 200,000 losing their jobs and having to find something else?
Yeah, it's sad but if car companies keep building their products with planned obsolescence they're gonna see people turning towards the car makers whose cars have the longuest lifespans.
GM's latest offerings (over the past 5 years or so) are a huge step up in quality - and I can say that because I've been in many of these offerings (impala, malibu, G6, solstice, ect...).
It's just too little too late. People are now brainwashed into thinking if its american, then its automatically cheap and lacking quality.
It's true we all work for our money and have the right to choose a product, but don't spit bull@!#$ about GM's current quality, because it's up there and competitive now...
My personal favorite solution to this mess - start making new models every OTHER year and stagger which are released when. In these times, far fewer people are gonna buy new cars (DUH), and the makers can take their time and get it right.

Cars are not investments, nothing depreciates faster in value. Build quality and reliability, I dont think so for example my roommates Celica same year as my cav, he's already blown up one motor and the thing has constant check engine codes for various things, not to mention when you hit a bump it sounds like its flying apart. Yet my cav is now in Ohio still with the original motor and has never had anything but oil changes and I put well over 200 drag passes on it not to mention numerous street encounters
That build quality, refinement and reliability thing is a myth that they create about themselves because I've never saw any evidence to prove it.

My 2002 cavalier was made Mexico. Many parts, including the engine in my Honda are made in Alliston, Ontario. I'm supporting my local economy.
My 2005 Saturn Ion had so many squeeks and creeks within the first year of buying it, it was ridiculous.. I ran over train tracks near my house with the ion, and it feels like the car is going to fall apart right there. Ran over the same set with my civic, and there was no squeeks, rattles, etc.. Just quiet. I want even go into how much better the fit and finish is way better in the civic.. I should take pics to compare.
So what it comes down to is.. I work hard for my money. I want to buy a car that isn't a piece of crap within the first year of buying it. If GM and especially Dodge want to stay alive, take a step back and decide how to make cars that rival imports in build quality. Till then, I don't plan to ever buy another domestic car again.

Here is my Suggestion to SAVE GM.
First. DROP THE @!#$ GMC brand, it is the biggest waste of life in the ENTIRE WORLD it is the EXACT SAME vehicle as the Chevrolet model, with an alphabet instead of a bowtie.
NEXT
CONSOLIDATE THE HUMMER BRAND to Chevrolet trucks. they are to close to bother with separate companies.
they can be Chevrolet H3 or H2 or H3 SUT
THIRDLY
STOP BUILDING DIFFERENT CARS OFF THE SAME PLATFORM. if someone wants an acadia, they dont want an outlook, or the buick model, or whatever else.
FOURTH
If they want to keep all their goddamn brand around, they need to specialize the brands to increase interest.
i.e.
GMC - which shouldnt exist anyway but if it does. ONLY TRUCKS. NO SUV's NO CROSSOVERS
CHEVROLET- Economy vehicles, and the corvette/camaro. keep the cobalts, the impalas, aveos, get rid of the TAHOE, SUBURBAN, Van models,
Pontiac- performance models of vehicles. G6, ditch G5 its a @!#$ign cobalt, keep the G8 and solstice, i dont know what else they even have but they should be a sport branch of CHEVROLET.
SATURN- WHO CARES. ditch them, they are a combo of GMC/PONTIAC/Chevrolet. they are more redundant than GMC they use the cobalt platform, the acadia platform...
take the saturn sky and merge it into chevrolet so they have a convertible sporty car.
saturn ion nixed. the vue, goes to chevrolet...
BUICK. they do pretty well with old people, we just need to consolidate them down to "BOAT MOBILES" - the big cushy luxurious cars old people like. with those models I.e. lucerne... etc. do a better job with cushy materials on the interior, no cheap plastic that creaks and cracks.
they have so much technology and things to work with, but they squander it trying to give every fukcing branch of GM their own illigitimate fukc child to toy around with and change the front and rear bumpers.
hopefully this makes sense. i really want to see GM remain around whether anybody who can do anything about it reads this, is another matter. but they need to stop @!#$ with old technology. they need to improve gas mileage and not rebrand the same horse with a different saddle.

well what makes you think that if the japanese bumped off there competition that they would mfg here any way? they go ahead open up a factory purely for PR. Why would they want to mfg here when theres China and mexico. There ultimate Goal is is own the US. Yet people dont want to wake up.
The ultimate goal of any company is to make money and to dominate the market segment. The Japanese don't want to own your country, because then they'd have to run it and who wants that headache?
You also seem to forget WHY they got so big in the first place. It wasn't PR, it wasn't just an empty fad, they merely offered better and more innovative products. When there was a gas crisis, they had fuel efficient cars. When American cars were piss poor quality, they offered cars that lasted longuer than yours. When you had Atari, they had Nintendo. When you came out with cassettes, they had CD's. And on, and on, and on...
You want "Made in America" stamped on everything? Great! But be prepared to pay more as a consumer or have American workers be paid less or work more. You said so yourself that the Japanese make more money simply by underpaying their workforce. You want the market dominance of the Japanese, go for it. You can go work 70 hours a week with no overtime and sleep in internet cafes and have sex with prostitutes because you either don't have the time or money for anything else. True story, friend of mine went to China for a job installing robots at a factory. He started chatting to one of the foremen who was the only english speaker there about vacation time. The guy cheerfully announced that he had tons of vacation time. In fact, he had a day off every week!

As if a few more million sales is going to help GM, the biggest automobile seller in the world. Chevrolet is the largest growing company in Europe. Buick is the biggest selling company in China. GM sells more cars than almost any other company in the world and it still can't make money. What's selling a few million more gonna do for them now?
In Japan people are punished for their incompetence and never work again anywhere. In America people are rewarded. How many big name executive walk away with million dollar severance packages (and another cushy job) after ruining a company?
