Checker Motors Corporation
Remember these?
I think that with the US auto industry going into the crapper, an super low volume car company like Checker would be ripe for a comeback. After all, a purpose built taxicab would sell rather well. You could re-use the old styling and build the car on a truck frame (The Colorado/Canyon springs to mind). Then simply update the engines for something more modern, tough and economical. Maybe a 4 banger diesel or some lame Hybrid.
The reason I mention this is because I sincerely think that Limos, Cop Cars and Cabs built from standard street cars have their days numbered, to be replaced by purpose built fleet vehicles. In fact, if I was a richer man than I am I'd buy the rights to reproduce the Crown Victoria and would build it in a smaller, sleeker factory. Fixing that damn gas tank problem once and for all and making it a purpose built police vehicle.
True, I think minivans could easily replace most cabs and SUVs could replace cop cars, but it's always nice to be traditional when you can.
Chevy Caprice>Ford Crown Vic
