"On March 28th 2010, AMS Performance added their name to an elite list of world record title holders with their Drag Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VIII shattering the four-cylinder record with a 228 mph pass at the spring 2010 Texas Mile Shootout, beating the old four-cylinder record of 223 mph by 5 mph. That car is nothing short of amazing.

However the fire deal sucked.

Props to AMS though.

I'm a huge fan of these types of competitions. with it's variety of neato rides.

I was impressed with the run until it burned.

I would choose not to brag about the event/record considering the engine expired.

I hope the sport avoids the one run technologies.

Fire or not, they broke a record and it only takes one run to break a record. And i'm sure they will be rebuilding, that car will prbly be semi-famous for a while.

so if you won a #1 record in the world you wouldnt say a word about it? come on. I guarantee if your car exploded, you would still say, hey i have this number one record in the world for the fastest 4 cylinder in the world.

In most forms of racing, a backup run is required to claim any record. This is to not only prove that the record is valid and not a fluke, but to show that the machine is not being sacrificed to set a record.

I agree that destroying your machine to set a record, and also not having a backup run, does take some glimmer off the accomplishment. It would not fly at Bonneville or NHRA.

I think I already admited that it was impresive, but It`s not number one anyway. Only in it`s class.

I surely would not brag about blowing 20g`s on that record when guys are going faster with reusable hardware.

Put it this way and hypothetically....I would not hang the plaque in the shop for the only fact hat the engine let go.
I would qualify with every interview and mention, that I'd be back after the bills were paid to back the run up.
Then, I might hand the plaque up and even make a few jackets and swag for the fanbois instead "collector" shards of engine.

Bill,
I'm sure we'd all love to see a GM 4pot give it a go.

gotta agree with bill and greg. the two passes is a legitimate claim to to make for a record. one guy, well i went 205mph but the motor blew. guy #2 well i only went 202mph but my motor can do that all day long. which builder would you go with? seen too many shops build dyno cars that can't last just so they can claim the biggest h.p. motor even though it didnt hold up. nothing against ams because they are great at what they do.

Is this record really all that great?

I was watching Pass Time last night. A 4cyl VW rail car screwed up a run and still make 211 in the quarter.

because its geared for the 1/4 and not sustaining that speed for very long. put it out on the standing mile and its a total different story. just like why they had to add more aero to the evo.

and i would say judging from the video of the evo, it wasnt something in the motor that let go. no explosions or pieces busting apart, just fire. so that could have been something as easy as a fuel line.

have to agree it was probably most def a fuel rail/line problem, easy fix, can't put it in the books saying the motor didn't hold up, I love this freakin car, and the AMS team, to go that fast with an inline 4, d@mn, what can I say though......4G63 power baby! O and bill no offense sincerly, but this is a thread on the AMS EVO being a fast @$$ car-the fastest, so anything involingthe AMS EVO being a fast-@$$ car SHOULD be on this thread--unless you want to start about 50 new ones that lay on each specific aspect of the same car, and the build

4g63 > 4b11 all day long
i think they should of gone with the none MIVEC, evo 8 motor, just because it's less to go wrong

I know, I know...but Joe's post was not a courteous pointing out of that fact; it was kinda pissy. So I gave pissy back!
You, on the other hand, did much better

There's no denying the cars' accomplishments, although it is getting a little long in the tooth by now. Rather than keep milking the same car year after year, I'd like to see an Evo X. They certainly have the capability and the resources.

He said he "felt something in the motor let go" how do you feel a fuel line letting go?

Just sayin lol

"As I passed the traps, I felt something in the motor let go..." That's before he pulled the parachute, which means with no fuel at those speeds and that high of compression, your likely to have significant engine/compression braking. If he had said "I 'heard' something in the motor let go" then I wouldn't consider a fuel line at all.

Just so we are clear, this is a "full body" (not including rails) record right?

did you even watch the video or read the description?

this is the DRAG car fire, not their time attack car... that was a seperate occasion. the evo VIII has a 4G63 last I checked.

the part that impresses me? Its a DRAG CAR doing a top speed run, and bests the current record.
as to whether or not its official, two passes in opposite directions are usually required, so thats up for debate.

those arguing about reusable hardware? wow.. this car has smashed multiple 1/4 mile records and runs fairly consistently without engine changes. How many drag passes were already on that engine before they just took it to the mile to see what it could do?

unfortunately, drag cars aren't really meant to run for extended periods, which is probably why the engine let go at the end of the mile.

I mentioned the rail cars poor performance as reference. It leads me to believe that this result isn't that exciting afterall, relatively.

It sounded to me that he admited the engine let go. He does seem to have humility in the interview. I respect that and suspect that he might be more satified with a back up run himself.

In any case, I have said repeatedly that it's impressive. I just hope this brings out some more competition.

WTF are you talking about??

the evo 9 has a mivec 4g63., the non mivec 4g63s(gvr4, evo1-8, DSM) are proven up to 1400hp... i think the highest power that anybody has got out of the iiiv motor is around 1200.....

no @!#$ it's a drag car......
