I am looking at purchasing a Mercedes Benz S600 between the years of 1996 - 1999. I was wondering if anybody knew anything about them, problem wise.

its a mercedes, at least 11 years old, and an S class. parts will break often, you will have electrical issues, and repairs will cost as much as buying a new car.

yup everything in those cars work off of some sort of vacuum. unless you have money to spend on repairs i would look the other way. we had an s500 nice car none the less though.. s600 are v12s i think . i would say your better off with an S500 or S430.

Prepare to really earn the admiring glances of others as you pimp yourself in such a car, for you are going to pay hard to keep it running. If you're looking for a cheap path to high status, this ain't it.

Yes, it is a v12. The one i'm looking at is in Palm Beach, FL it had 94k miles on it mercedes benz inspection but they are asking $9k. Which i think is a little high. It'll b a summer car.

I was doing some research and the ONLY thing I could between the 500 & 600 is the v12. Is that true? Sorry about the multiple posts, i'm using my cell and it only allows so many letters/spaces

Those were the old 48V DOHC V12s on the 140 chassis. Really complicated cars, from the closing assist on doors, to the little antenna on the back to help you reverse park (yes, they are that huge). One fault on the computer and expect to pay for it dearly Runs extremely hot and literally sips fuel at idle. Being in a 5300+lbs body, don't expect that car to be very swift either, especially being that old.
Word of advice, German cars out of warranty is really asking for it. Best of luck.

We're talkin about a Mercedes not a BMW. Mercedes has a wonderful track record during the 90's

If you know enough about it to dismiss attempts at advice....why are you asking for advice? Just buy the thing and don't waste our time!

Hahn, whats wrong with asking for advice?
Azncav, why did you decide to get rid of it? The assist park is kinda like what cadillac had in 2000 - 2002, I think

again, it's no longer the 90's. cars wear out. repairs will come often, and will be expensive.

More creature comfort gizmos, V12, more wood and leather.

When placing into reverse, two 3inch chrome antennas would rise on each corner to give you an indication where your ass is when backing up.

This is my personal opinion, but my parents owned a W140 S320 from that era. I remember sitting in the MB dealership in a S600 and was awestruck. The S600 from that era was truly one of the cars of it's time. All the stupid gizmos and creature comforts and overengineered stuff and vaccuum everything was truly rediculous and awesome to think about. That huge tank with double paned glass and a monstrous V12 was definitely one of the most baller pimp status cars ever made for its time.

I recently got thrown back 15 years and got to sit in another S600, and it was definitely a call back to my childhood and thought it was the best time ever. If I could buy one, I definitely would. Don't forget though, this is an 11-15 year old Mercedes that won't have the best of reliability. When it goes bad, it can definitely empty your pockets severely. Also, it's probably a complex PITA to work on if you can even understand how it works. And don't forget that while it was the cream of the crop in its time, a decade and a half of technology has trumped it.

Good luck, it has it's pros and cons.

And btw, the one I saw when I was a kid was black on black, with a price tag of $150,000. I'll never forget that.

Nothing's wrong with it, if you're sincere...but your responses indicate you are more interested in just finding someone to agree with you that you should buy it.
If you question the advice that your request for advice results in, you are not really interested in advice.
