Priorities. What would you do?
Tuesday, August 03, 2010 11:17 AM
I had to get a new car, mine was falling apart. So I I got a stripped base Cobalt in February because even with a credit score of 700+ and perfect credit, i had not bought a new car or had any car payments in 8 years, so nobody would give me a loan. They call it "Loan Experience" And without it you may as well have bad credit. It's not too bad since I wanted really low payments anyway ($198 a month) and really only planned to keep it a year. It's a 4-door auto has A/C, is brand new, It gets the job done. My dislike is it has no power windows or locks, which would be fine on a 2-door, but on a 4-door it gets tedious to remember to lock every door and have to roll up/down a bunch of windows. It's livable, but inconvenient. Could I live with it?
yes.
But that's not the plan. I put a butt load of money down, +trade, + they tacked on every incentive GM had on it and I have equity in it. The car is worth $12000, i owe $8000. So the idea the dealer cooked up was to build "loan experience" After 13 months of perfect payments i can trade it in and get whatever i wanted. I want a Camaro, i can afford it no problem it but no bank would loan me the money because i didn't have that experience. But I will and that's the plan I was going for.....

...But now there is trouble.
I drove my cousins GSX-R the other day and i fuggin love it. I had a blast on that thing. I'm thinking I want the bike now, and just dealing with the Cobalt. It's not flashy, comfortable or even fun but it drives nice, has air, and gets me where i need to go. The bike would be my fun ride. The payments with the bike and cobalt would be exactly what my Camaro payment would be. And this way i have a cobalt for the winter, and bike for the summer. With that scenario, since I'd be keeping it i could just have keyless entry put on it.
The Camaro downside would be that it would be my only car till i could find a winter beater.
I'm really torn. Any bike guys out there? I know most bike guys have just ok cars because they prefer riding instead of driving. I still love the Camaro, and i do a lot of road traveling to visit family so having a comfortable car is kind of important to me. So hell i don't know what to do and thought I'd toss it out on an open forum to get some 2nd opinions.

A biker just died last night not even 5 miles away from my house. It was a head-on with a Neon. I will never own a bike. Save your life and get the camaro and a cheap winter beater.

Story.

bikes are better in almost everyway until you're about to hit/get hit by something.

food for thought.

Truth. I just sold my Ducati because of this reason. Had a riding buddy killed by a distracted driver about a month ago on his XB-12R.

Yeah, there's always that. It's the one thing that has kept me out of the bike shop.
Well there's the death thing, and of course there's this...

The bike was fun, but as the day goes on I'm thinking about how impractical it is.

Get the car dude... A bike is awesome & you will always get off it with a smile on your face.. But nothing beats driving in a nice car for a daily driver...

Another thing.. street bikes are all over the place.. You can always get one later- something decent outright for $3500-$4500.

I am building a custom chopper right now and Im dying to ride it, but I cant get the thought out of my head about getting blasted by a car- youre pretty much dead or severely injured..

Personally I have a bike, I will one a bike till the day I can no longer ride. AI have had a few close counters but thankfully with me being an alert rider I have gotten out of a few sticky situations. If you do I highly Highly suggest a motorcycle safety coarse, and full quality gear.

I don't want to jack your thread, so if you have any questions please feel free to PM me.

Not sure what your income is, personally not my business, but bike insruance can be a bit much. Since you don't have the "loan experience" you might be able to get a bike loan for a lot cheaper, pay it off sooner and get your needed "experience" for your camaro while putting some aside for a payment?

I suggest getting a couple of VIN's from a new dealer and go to your insurance to get a quote or two. While there, sit on a few bikes, get a feel for how you sit on them.
I personally have a 2008 Suzuki Gsx650F , which is a sports touring. It has normal seating, some decent power, nothing to brag about, but cheap insurance, I pay $32 a month for full coverage at the age of 22 and one speeding ticket, A GSXR 600 was $2400 a year for my insurance if I would have gotten it.

Lanman31337 -F = fatties = do not want. A little chunk in the junk is ok though.

Quibby, we get onto bullsh*t on here. That don't mean we don't get along. Its just e-beefing, it means nothing.

But I am liking the idea of buying a cheap used one later next year after getting the Camaro. That's a brilliant idea.

It depends...I mean, me I love cars, but at the same time, I would ride a bike all day every day if I could. I live to ride on two wheels. Even if I'm by myself...

If your that kinda person then go bike.

If not, get a car.

But you could def do both. My little brother just bought a 06 Gixxer for 4200, mint condition...

Story.

Every week there's at least one motorcycle accident that makes the news that's either critically injured or dead cycle rider(s), 9 times out of 10 it's because of a distracted driver. Me and my wife are on the fence about getting bikes or Vespa's because of this, neither one of us want's to recieve that call or that knock on the door.

Buy the Camaro. Its cooler than a bike, safer than a bike, you can drive it more than a bike, you can still go buy groceries in it, and if you really want, you COULD drive it in winter (if my first manager could drive his NSX in arctic winters, I'm positive you could drive a Camaro in winter.). People would hate you for driving it in winter, but you could do it.

You do NOT want to start comparing motorcycle wreck numbers to car fatalities. Trust me.

I've been biking for over two decades (Started on dirtbikes, 3 wheelers/4 wheelers and went to sport bikes) and I can tell you CAR FATALITIES far outweigh bike fatalities.

You think you're safe in that car? Really? Think again. Safer than on a bike? Maybe, but then again, maybe not?

I'm a Gixxer lover and rider (Suzuki GSX-R) and I've been down ONCE in 20 years on a sport bike. On a dark road at night, gravel on a curve. Injuries? None except some road rash. Why? Top grade equipment and skill level. I was going 96mph.

Get the bike in the spring as suggested though. Winter is coming soon , in a few months. Well, actually, not that I think of it, get the bike in December/January. The new models will be out and be on KILLER special because sales on bikes SUCK that time of year for obvious reasons.

If you love the ride, get the bike. If not, don't .

Three key rules to a bike.

1. Top notch protective gear. (And wear it, it's useless "at home")

2. Always ride like you're invisible to cars (because you usually are in their eyes)

3. Ride what you're comfortable at your skill level on and can pick up if you drop it.

Good luck in your decision.

I don't know if anyone else has suggested this as I haven't read all the responses yet, but I would suggest...

Keep the Cobalt. If you can afford it, make extra payments and get it paid off as soon as possible. Once the Cobalt is paid off, go out and get the Camaro you want. This way you'll still have a (reliable) winter beater in the Cobalt. You'll know there's no problems, it hasn't been abused, neglected or anything else since you're the only person that's owned it. Unless you absolutely just hate the Cobalt, I don't see any real reason to get rid of it, especially if you're only going to drive it 4 - 6 months of the year as a winter beater. Paying off the car loan instead of trading it up to a new car can only help your credit history/rating, especially if you have a lack of loan experience and that's actually the problem. It goes to show you can maintain a consistent payment structure and have the ability to pay off a loan.

As far as bike vs. car, I'm not sure what to really say. If you always longed for a new Camaro then I would think it would be what you would want to get most. I've never been a bike guy (then again I've never been on one) so I can't compare one over the other.

That's what i said, apparently it's a pretty big deal. Since last summer i was turned down for every car i looked at and my credit is flawless, and every dealer said the same thing "no loan experience" I've bought and paid for 7 cars over the years but if the loan falls off the credit report, you're s.o.l.. Plus i've lived in a home that belonged to my grand mother that is fully paid off so i also don't have rent factored in either so on paper i just look like a guy with just a few credit cards paid on time over 20 years and nothing else.

One word - maintenance. Are you planning to keep the bike for a long time? Do you have ride-able weather all year round, or only 6-ish months a year? If the answers are yes and yes, think about frequent oil changes, chain adjustments/lubrication, tires and brakes that wear way faster than a car, not to mention expensive and/or tedious valve adjustments. Years ago i had a bike as a cheap way to commute and save on gas and maintenance. Practically that was no good.

The camaro would likely be trouble free for 100k miles and beyond and probably only need oil changes for the first half of that or so.
