LD9 in non-J body
Wednesday, September 26, 2007 9:46 PM
I tried a search and couldn't find any info on this.
I am eventually going to put an LD9 into a '73 Chevy Vega
I was hoping to be able to use the stock ECU without the use of the
J-car gauge cluster, but I understand the anti-theft system will not allow this.
Does anyone know a way to "trick" the ECU into thinking the cluster is
still attached? (I want to use the old school Vega gauges instead).
Oh yeah, the engine/ECU r from a '97 Cav. I'm on a budget in case you're
wondering or else I would just use a stand alone system.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Dave.

Then you're not swapping in an LD9. Plain and simple. Swap a 350 for thousands less, for hundreds more HP than the LD9.

im pretty sure you can run an older j-body ECU without the gages. a 97 like what you have should work, but maybe some one can correct me if im wrong.

I already have these pieces (the ones in my original post) for this puzzle of mine. Once the car is running and the chassis bugs are worked out, I eventually will swap in an aftermarket ECU, It would just b nice to fire it up w/ what I have already...

...Yeah, I'll swap a small block into my Vega, That will REALLY set me apart from the crowd! I don't think that's EVER been done!

Information found here is mostly of very advanced nature and as such should not be approached lightly.

Everyone else tho... thanks for your positive input, much appreciated.

Your talking about having a custom adapter fabbed in order to just mount the engine lateral, because Mantapart is the only company to ever make the transmission adapter, but they pretty much don't exist anymore (as far as customer service...physically they exist). Then you have to fab mounts for the engine as well. There are no kits to make a Quad 4 or LD9 into a FR configuration. It will cost $$$$. I understand you want to be different, but mentioning that you are on a budget is a pretty big deal when you say you want to turn the rear wheels with a quad4 or ld9 motor.

...and if you can't afford a standalone, then you can't afford to do this PERIOD!!

Sounds 2 me like you're all about money... U should check my profile, then u would notice I have a background in Machining/Assembly/and Fabrication. I can do all of this MYSELF. My original question was about the ECU/Anti-Theft.
I suggest WE ALL stay on topic instead of trying to HATE on other peoples' plans. Unless U have anything else to state that is already obvious to me because it IS MY project, go bother someone else F'n HATER.

My appologies then. If you have the capablities to fab everything yourself, then more power to you. For the layperson, though, this would be a pretty big and expensive project for minimal gains. Good luck.

Thanks Brian, you're right... If I tried 2 do this maybe 5-8 years ago, I would have definately choked .
I know it's still not gonna b a cakewalk, lots of time will be invested, I'll take any luck i can get .
Thanks...

Yeah I was bout to say,

Honestly Id skip the stock ecm crap save and go Megasquirt.

Putting it in the car will be the easy part.

I have an adapter/spacer setup for my fiero/ecotec swap. I am sure you will run into the same issue of the tranny not fitting the motor. Making a spacer between the flexplate/flywheel is a pretty large and intense job. You can actually adjust the engagement of the clutch with the thickness of the spacer...

Hopefully you know what im talking bout so i dont look dumb
