Good news I got megasquirt up and running, took the car out and its now drivable under load RPMs (4000 and below) enough to get me around untill i can get a WB o2 which should be here like next week. But for everyone else running Megasquirt can you take a screen shot of your "tuning" page and VE maps so i can compare. All my stuff is on my buddy's computer so once i get a chance to get online with his comp. i'll post mine, I was just curious and want to compare. Thanks
Good idea, since I lost all my fuel maps.
Where is DJ and the rest with their yummy maps and finely tuned warmup enrichments!!!
<img src="http://home.nycap.rr.com/xenox/jbody/jbody_shocker.jpg">
just curious but why do you need aftermarket EM?
if your asking me, I am working on going boosted, also have a spare motor that I want to build. I don't like the idea, or the way FMU work, so i refuse to use them and this is much better.
i was wondering how you would tune megasqurit. i looked at there web page and my head started to hurt. how does that alll work. i am planing on going boost soon will it work for my ecotec.
yes it will work, It is kind of a pain to learn, and to tell the truth i visit the site everyday looking for something i missed. I have read the tuning page like 100000 times and still don't understand everything. if you are for sure set on Megasquirt start reading now and don't quit.
But back on subject anyone have any screen shots of tuning maps or VE maps?
Did you get the ignition running on MS as well?
fortune cookie say:
better a delay than a disaster.
nope just running fuel, V2.2.
I've been thinking of trying the ignition on the other motor i want to build but i don't know fore sure yet
Anybody using the IAC control? And where is everyone getting their tach signal? Will the one out of the black plug work? And where will I find a com cable from my USB laptop to the MS unit? Thanks!
O noes!
not using the IAC cotrol. tach signal is recieved through pin 10 on the black plug works great (98 2200 3 spd auto) and check out diyautotune.com for a compatible usb that works with everything so they say
What did you do for your power to the MS and the fuel injectors? I'm thinking of using some sort of relay board, probalbly out of another J-body, to switch on with the ignition switch for them. Can I find that cable at Best Buy or anything?
How did you do the sensors too, thanks!
O noes!
-For tach signal like he said pin#10 worked great
-I am notusing the IAC controll or using megasquirt for the fan. since i am keeping the stock ecu for all the other crap in the car tied into it (cruise, ac, cluster, trans ect) im letting it continue to controll the radiator fan and idle selenoid
-So far i dont think anyone is using ms to controll ignition on a j except maybe dj?? but i think iirc hes using a msd box instead of ms for that. i plan to do the edis swap but have been exteremely lazy lately.
-the stock intake temp sensor is working fine for me. for temp i was using a POT to tell ms how cold the engine was since i didint have a bung for a 2nd coolant temp sensor. now i have the metal tube from a 2200 with a coolant temp sensor bung in it patched into my radiator hose. WORKS GREAT! i only tapped into the one wire on the tps (signal) since the stock pcm and ms both use a 5v refrence signal and i have an auto so both the stock pcm and ms needed to know throttle position.
-Power was a concern for me since i have a number of things running in the car. i added a 6 position fuse block and a 30 amp relay to the car. i trip the relay from the ign / pcm fuse inside the car (not the fuse used to test it in the pics) and get power for it directly from the battery (shortest distance from batt to ms is best) this gives me 30 amps of on while cranking power to use for whatever i need!
-Tuning it is really easy if you have a wideband. you can edit the maps while you drive in real time graphicaly. itl show you where on the map you are you can refrence your afr at that point and change it manualy as you drive. once you get a rough map you can set a target afr and run datalogs. you can then run the logs thru mstweak and have it fine tune the maps for you if you feel the need. i was able to get it close enough to make me happy manualy. i picked up power and mileage with this alone!
there are pics of much of this at the link in my sig. some of the info is off since things have changed with the build and the pics arent up to date but the power stuff is there along with some other crap.

Alright cool, sounds like I'm on the right track. I am going off of the stock sensors for everything, coolant, IAT, TPS, and what not. Need to get a few more items tomorrow and then it should be ready to run.
I have the PLX wideband. That should make it nice to tune. For you ignition you can use the stock crank trigger. It's somewhere's on the MS site.
O noes!
Many moons ago I posted the VE tables for a stock 95 vintage 2.2. Those tables could be jacked around so they roughly follow the torque curve for the 2200 without too much work.
Remember to run on the rich side under boost if you are relying on stock spark advance settings. I was thinking the other day about feeding a fake knock signal to the oem pcm under boost conditions to trick the ecm into reducing timing. The higher the boost, the larger and faster the fake knock signal needs to be. And if the MS board allows, the real knock sgnal could be used to trigger extra fuel. It's backward from what's usually done, but a setup like that would give knock protection as well as retarded spark timing under boost.
Glad to see not everyone falls into the trap of spending megadollars for an aftermarket standalone. Keep up the good work.

I had spark hooked up for a couple hours in my car, but took it off as i have not yet finished the knock sensor interface. once i get that done, i'll put the spark back on and start tuning it.
I would be careful going off the stock IAT/ECT sensors. We established a while ago that the GM pcm switches the bias resistors during warmup which can result in erroneous readings with the megasquirt at different stages of warmup. This is the reason I'm running 2 IAT sensors and 2 ECT sensors, to avoid this problem. The rest of the sensors can indeed by spliced into with no problems (tps, etc), its just the IAT/ECT can't really be spliced into. I just threw a couple back not too long ago so details are kind of slipping my mind right now, but I will post back later on specifics.

what exactly was your setup?
99 Turbo Sunfire GT | Ram 2500 | International Rollback | Mr Hanky the Suburban
I have a MS1 v2.2board running msns-e code.
to control spark i use the same settings as the setup for gm 7pin hei, as they are essentially the same.
Is that what you wanted to know? If you want more, ask me and I'll give as much as I can at this time. many of my diagrams are incomplete right now.
so ignition can be done with the stock GM DIS? using the 7pin hei?
did you have any problems with it? did you drive it with the ignition set up or just idle?
i'm kind of curious since somewhere i read the MS won't work with GM DIS.
my set up is alot like Roscoe, since he was the one who helped me the most with MS, i am using a fuse block and a relay, with power coming straight off the battery and the PCM fuse so far its been working great. My buddy's wideband will be here next week sometime and i will be able to tune N/A for awhile before i get into boost
I had to use an icm from a pre-obdII engine. I just spliced the crank sensor into the second icm and hooked it up like the hei info on the msns-e page.
I did drive it, but not very far. basicly out of my garage and back in again. i did blip the throttle a couple times and did a slow rpm increase and everything was working the same or better than stock. idle seemed better, everything else kinda hard to tell.
the only problem i had was finding the proper trigger angle. i think it worked out being between 58 and 60 degrees.
I think tomorrow i will work at doing up diagrams so that i can easily share info.
I would really like to see the diagrams. I havent looked much into how the earlier ignition systems work (odb1 wasted spark) but i know that the wasted spark system is way different then the hei. maybe its just a matter of how the 2 different ignition modules recieve and prcess the same information that allow it to be compatable. either way sounds like something worth some attention! i do recall something on the megasquirt forum about someone riging something up on the bench but never on a car.

can I ask a why those that have a WB dont use MSNS auto tune feature?
"
boobs now with Riboflabin"
Here are some updated pics of my megasquirt setup.
I havent wrapped any of the wiring yet since im still dicking with things. fortunaely its not a daily driver
The tripple gauge pod with autometer egt, boost and aem wideband installed.
Megasquirt II mounted in glovebox. (note the handy conduit running from engine bay)
There is alotta noise about ms and what sensors to use. i didint have a good place for a 2nd coolant temp sensor so i made one! Here is a mini how-to
this is a coolant crossover tube from a 2200. its got a coolant temp bung in it. i hacked the section i needed off
Be sure to clean up the cuts of you do this! dont need shavings getting in your coolant or cutting up the hose!
Here is the finished part
This is the upper radiator hose with the area i want to install the metal tube hacked out.
Here it is installed.
Hope some of you squirtin a J can find this information useful!

its a pita to get mstweak to work with msII logs. i dunno about others but with the wideband it was so easy to dial in my tables it really wasint needed. i have it leaned out to 16:1 under cruise (YES this is safe) ranging to 14.7 for part throttle accel and "normal" driving areas on up to 12.5:1 under wot. ive picke dup notable power and much better mileage with this setup. i check my plugs often and everythings great!

I have used it and it works very well. only problem is you can't tune spark by auto tune. tho it is quite risky to let it tune spark like that.
