Tackling the cleaning/polishing/waxing
Friday, April 08, 2005 11:38 AM
Hey all,

I plan on tackling this project this weekend, being nice an all.

I can get a 3 step Meguiars kit(cleaning, polishing, waxing)
i have a armor all, wash home now, do I still need to buy the cleaning item above, i reckon its just the soap anyway?

My black car looks like @!#$ close up, alot of swirls etc....
Did anyone use this product to clean up their cars?
If not what would you recommend?

thanks in advance,
Kristen

If you have a black car, get the Meguire's 3Step that you listed. If you want black paint to look good close up, you can't cheap out on the wax. Armor All works alright on a color, but for black paint you need to invest some time. Gold Class works really good too.

armor all is garbage... the 3step is alright for consumer grade stuff

Wash the car in laundry detergent from here on out. Just regular Tide will do, its the softest soap you can use on a car, just kinda hard to rinse off.
Take a clay bar to the car to remove all the hard to get stuff.
Next though this is expensive, go to an auto paint dealer and pick up 3M Imperial Hand Glaze, its by far the best stuff I have ever used. I use a Meguiars pad to apply and a microfiber towel to take off.
Once you do this lay a coat of Wax. (Meguiars Gold Class, Zymol, Mothers). Make sure you use the paste. Forget the liquid stuff.
That should get your car looking pretty good.
If there are still alot of swirl marks you could always get it buffed polished and waxed, or even wet sanded, polished and waxed depending on how thick your clear coat is.

^ good tips

the best thing you can do for your paint is constantly keep it clean, and prevent contaminants from setting into the clear coat...

i wash my car about once every 1-2 weeks, using Meguiars Next-Gen car soap, and a regular ol' cotton terry cloth. For drying, i just get some bath towels from inside, and drape the towel over the area to be dried, and then i just smooth the towel out and pick up all the water...most of the scratches in your paint are there from washing and drying, so i try to be as gentle as i can.

After that, i use the Mother's Clay bar kit (once every 3 months or so) followed by Meguiars #26 Show Car Glaze. Then i'll follow up with either a coat of Meguiars Color-X, or Zymol, depending on how long it's been since i've waxed.

for all the application of wax and polish onto the car, i use a Meguiars pad, and for buffing and polishing, i use the microfiber cloths from Advanced Auto parts (they come in packs of 3; yellow, blue, and green)
