hey i need to paint my body kit and hood, i have a few questions, what psi do i want to spray at, and second what type of paint should i buy.. tell me if im wrong but sand the original paint off, primer, then wet sand, for that smooth finish, paint then clear
Guns typically are 45 psi.
As far as paint goes... it comes down to preference really. For a good stock color job, I'd recommend personally DuPont... for "not so stock" colors X-otic. I'm going to be using X-otic for my next paint job.
You don't need to sand the origional paint off. If the paint is ok (and not previously done by Maaco)... all you need to do is wetsand and respray. That would be the better way to go about it for someone who doesn't pack a lot of experience under their belt.
Primers intended purpose is to fill small scratches... or for use on bare metal and plastics (and fiberglass). Contrary to some beliefs, you do not NEED to prime a car before painting... unless like I said you have bare metal, plastic, fiberglass or over body work.
i have to sand it down because i took my intake manifold off and left my throtle cable bracket on the valve cover, slammed my hood and a nice large dent with a small hole almost poking through the hood, yah i know i shoildnt have been drinking. lol
You dont even really need to wetsand it to respray it.. When i paint cars i scuff it all down, primer needed spots.. Go over everything with 320 ( to get out deep sanding scratches), seal it ( depending on what kind of paint im spraying) then clear.. Then sand with 400 wet, 1500 dry, and 3000 wet... then buff it all out and you will be good to go.. Its
You dont need to remove all the old paint..
When we get used parts at the shop (my work) I just clean 'em up and paint right over top..
yeah yeah yeah im gona sound like a dunce but im new to the whole autobody thing, what is "wet" sanding?
"wet sanding" is just what it sounds like, using special sandpaper that holds up in water, and a water source, basically as you sand you flush away what comes off. Keeps the paper from clogging up and keeps the dust down.
any advice as far as spraying the car, how much do i overlap? how long to wait before applying clear.
doubler> depends on what you're spraying really. I usually overlap 50% for base colors with no metallics. Metallics... depends on the concentration and if there's any pearls in it. With metallics and pearls... you usually want to overlap 33% - 50% (33% if you do light coats... not really light... but not like a regular coat)... and alternate your spray pattern. up down, side to side, diagonally both directions to keep the metallics even.

¤§Fallen Angel§¤ or hotbug1776, you are the pimp's on the painting world
I am interested in learning to paint some basics...
will this kit be good to start :

/me blushes
so I guess that would make me actually the "pimp momma" or "pimpette"
Anywho's... I'd actually suggest learning the basics of prepping and painting with an auto spray gun (like the ones that painters use) instead of an airbrush first. Airbrushes are more complicated in a sense than just a regular HVLP Gravity feed gun (what most shops I've seen use)
I'd recommend starting off there before you get to using an airbrush. Airbrushing and auto painting as separate entities are a totally different world. If you need any suggestions... feel free to email me.
Actually, I can't paint, but I can fab like a mofo, I'll leave tha painting to Fallen. In fact, I asked Fallen about the Eyelids for Sunfires, and then fabbed up my own anyway (LOL). it comes from my VW repair years (and that's a lot of years).
thanks for the compliment though, made my day.

Made my day too...
Hey... I love painting... but hate fabbing... I can do it, just run short on patience at times... wanna fab some stuff on my car for me? LOL I'll hook ya up on paint? How's that sound?
fabbing is usually an abbreviation for fabricating. Usually fabrication refers to doing something custom... or having to do some "custom work" to get something to fit right, whether it is something that's made for your car aftermarket and doesn't fit right, or something that's not made for your car that you want to fit.
I'm getting ready to "fab" up my clutch res holder here in the next few weeks, got it drawn out and ready to turn down and machine in the tool room at work (just need the time). I'm old school, I don't like to buy things, I prefer to make them myself, unless it's something that will cost alot more to make than to buy. then only if it is up to what I think it should be for the price.
thing is, I don't have the patience for painting, all the bodywork, the sanding, the waiting for the paint to flash and recoating, then sanding again, then clearcoating, waiting, coating again, waiting, waiting, all to much for me. I'm more of a "let the sparks and chips fly" kinda person.
Oh I C. thats like the custom work that sunfire PPL do to their hoods.......
