What is the proper way to pain small areas on the car body? I got some rust spots where the fuel intake is.

That would depend on where it is on the body you need to paint.

I find it easier (especially if you have minimal or no paint experience) just to paint the whole panel. i.e. if you have a small 1" in diameter rust spot on your door... repaint the whole door...

Its more like 4 inches...As far as i know you sand to the bare metal then add body filler, prime, sand, paint, wet sand...

right?

as long as it's not through the metal, or too far along, you can grind or sand the rust off. put body filler on only if it needs it (if the panel is uneven or if you need to fix a very minor dent). again, be conservative with the body filler. then just like you said, prime, sand, paint... etc.

sounds easy, but take your time with it and don't cut corners.
