removed crash bar..who else has?
Wednesday, May 11, 2005 4:25 PM
So I removed the crash bar today because that's the only way my kit will really fit. I trimmed the corners first but the front of the crash bar is what was in the way. Who else is driving around with no crash bar?

What are the pros if any, and cons of not having it?

Thanx....

did you put an andy's front on it? i had to cut mine, but there is no way i'd drive around without it. it's there for a reason.

are you talking about the whole metal bumper support or just the crush guard? i took my crush guard off because after i got done trimming it, there was like 1/2" left so i drilled out the rivits and removed it. been like that for 2 years now

i kept my "crush" on in the front. but as for the back i had to grind off the metal "support" bar that helped hold my stock rear bumper on. otherwise i was not able to mount my rear dragon bumper.

which one? mine is the street fighter.
If yours is the same, try cutting about 2 inches off each end.
Also, you may have to sand off about 1/4 of an inch where the large opening may be hitting the crash bar. I need to do that to mine, cuz it's not going back far enough to line up perfectly with the fenders.

hope that makes sense.

Had to trim a considerable amount off the center one in the front, and less trimming was required on the sides. It's still a part of the car (for the most part), though.

i have the street fighter.. to get it far enough back to line up with the fenders like the stock kit you have to cut off half of the entire front of the crash bar because that is where it hits so I figured instead of cutting it in half I just took it off cause it I cut it in half it would not have any of the strength.

I wouldn't have taken it off if I didn't have to just wondering how many other guys took theres off.

I was surprised too when I took it off it doesn't sag at all in the middle the front holds itself up nice..but I did put some hangers on just to hold it up.

anyone ever have a front or rear impact after performing these mods? the main reason these crash bars and crush panels are on the cars is to prevent death, not yours really, mainly the other persons, the crush panels and crash bars allow the impact to be transfered to the frame, each one scrubbing off energy, if you do not have these peices you are in effect presenting a harder surface to whatever or whoever may hit you, kinda like airbags slow your head down before it hits the steering wheel, same thing with the crush guard its meant to make a crash more survivable.

that being said as long as you warn whoever gets in your car, or make it known to the best of your knowledge so the other person can make an informed decision about what they are doing then i dont really see any issues at all. same with removing airbags personally i dont like them, have no use for them and prefer them to not work, but i have yet to find a way to deactivate my bag without shutting off the passanger bag cause if i get in a wreck and wipe myself out, thats my stupid fault but if i wipe out another person thats just wrong.

I don't get it. Did you guys take out the metal IMPACT bar or did you remove the foam or honey comb ABSORBER. All you need to do to fit most kits is just cut that front absorber in half or maybe take a few inches off the sides. The back I just took mine all the way off. But yah if you took off the impact bar then put it back on. LOL Someone hits you going 10mph and all of a sudden your car is a total loss because you have no bar along the front.

^^ lol yea you still didnt explain very well which you took off. its fine if the crush guard is off (the rubber honeycomb stuff), but if you remove part of the metal support bar, thats a bad idea. with the crush guard gone, all the impact is going onto the bar to prevent damage to the engine. if you remove that bar and get into an accident, well theres gonna be alot of damage to your car

well I wouldn't have taken it off it the stupid kit would have fit with it on..if I cut the metl bar in half won't it los all the support it was giviing? One thin strip isn't really gonna do anything will it. Anyone else who has this kit how much did you have to actually cut off to get yours to fit?

I cut my metal support bar in half last weekend to mount an intercooler.

I left a strip about 2.5" tall along the top-- Its still pretty sturdy, but integrity of the bar has definately been changed...

I am probably going to weld some strips of metal to the bottom of it to "box" it out again...
The inside is all hollow...

I wouldn't remove it totally- it seems like it really ties the front end together, you might end up with some kind of body flex between those 2 mounting points. At least bolt a metal strap or a bar across there.

You don't have to remove the crash bar. Cut a couple inches off each end. Then on the back side of the fiberglass bumper, sand down the edges that are hitting the bar. The part you need to sand down is where the mesh would wrap around the back of the bumper.

I already cut where the mesh would go.. I also took off the mesh..it fit fine there... it's in the middle of the bumper where the crash bar would be that is hitting.... where did you buy your kit? I got mine from cheapkitsdirect... is that where you got yours?
