Okay, my dad and I are painting the car ourselves (he's done a few cars before, turned out really good) and the guy at the local paint supply store said that we will need special primer and cleaner for the plastic parts (2nd Gen Z24 body kit)
Have any of you who have done your own cars been told the same thing? I mean, I dont wanna spend another $50-100 for some stuff I really dont need.
Any help would be appreciated!
You don't per say NEED it... but it's recommended by some people. It all really depends on preference. I worked at a shop that used the same primer for everything... and NOTHING ever came back to be redone. The reason they probably recommended it was because plastic parts tend to flex more than metal parts... however, if you prep the car right, you should be able to use a universal primer and be fine... maybe add a small amount of a flex additive for reassurance.
A good wax/grease remover (shop quality) should be fine to clean all of your parts... but just to be sure... is this a brand new bumper(s)? Bare plastic? Or used parts??
Either way, you should clean the parts thoroughly with a wax/grease remover to be sure there's no residue on the parts.
These are all used parts off a junkyard Cav..we've sanded them down through the clearcoat, and down to the urethane in some parts...but I just used basic can primer on them...only piece im really worried about flexing is the front bumper...the rest of the kit is sturdy...
Take ALL of the can primer off... if you're talking about rattle can... or anything else that might be, if there is any. putting actual auto paint over that will NOT yield good results... trust me on this
