Bomex........original or knock off?
Wednesday, July 27, 2005 11:18 PM
So,
Ive been shopping around for the Bomex kit for my 03 sunfire and I notices that the TRUE Bomex is about 1000$ wheras the knock off Bomex from Gravana is about 379$.......

http://www.gravanatuning.com/applications/2003_Pontiac_Sunfire_Coupe_2.2_16v.aspx/5/1818/_Body_Kit_Versus_BMX_Fiberglass_4_Piece_Kit

Am I missing something? Why would I pay 1000$ when I could pay 379$?

Opinions?

typically, knock off kits are a lower quality than the original.

I see, well i did a search on J-body and I havent found anyone that has it.

Are Gravanas kits known to be poor quality?

there's a few people who have it... can't think of any right off hand, but i know i've seen a few.

if the kit is made by Gravana, then it's probably pretty good, if not top-notch. however, if they are just selling a kit that some other company made, then who knows.

It's sold by Gravana but not made by them. BMX is a knock off of Bomex like Connon Fodder said. If I were you, I wouldn't get a knock off kit of a kit that is fiberglass...cheap fiberglass kits are no fun.

if its from gravana than its probably a good kit. i got my trd kit from them (well the gmx or whatever they call it) and it fit pretty good. you can pay 1000 for the real kit (which has the bomex logo stamped in the kit on the inside) but you have to remember its still fiberglass so it still might not fit good

i got my bmx kit from gravana...mine was made by versus motorsports....i think that it is good quality....have tried to fit it all yet though....the back bumper fit great...the front is a little different only because my car was wrecked so thats why it is a little bit tougher. I have not tried the sides yet.....i am trying to sell them....

ive seen the BMX kit on a few cars, and the fit looked ok to the eye, but i never asked about installation issues.

youve got it right there.....

its up to you.....TYPICALLY the replica kits dont have as much fiberglass in them and the fitment isnt as good. however this isnt always so (look at the andy's combat kit, etc). i have had both name brand kits (rk, andy's) and replica kits (bc2, bomex, etc) and the fitment has been very comparable. RK and the bomex replicas fit like a glove while the bc2 and andys required a little work.

i say whatever you buy, just buy from a .org company.

i got the one from gravana.. and there were a few minor fitment issues but no fiberglass kit is gonna be perfect.. i got it installed and installation was pretty easy.. comes with all the holes marked.. just drill and bolt on.. the only part that needed modification was the sideskirts needed to be cut a little.. nothing major... its a good kit and i would buy it.. i wouldnt spend 1000 for a kit when i can buy the same thing for 375

here comes the boost!

The authenic bomex doesn't cost $1000....they cut there prices in half becuase they have a new wharehouse. Full kit should cost around 800-900 shipped. I have the bomex front bumper on my car and i do'nt know how the knock off kits compare but the bomex is thin and very very flexable. I've seen some fiberglass kits on civics and the fiberglass was so thick and rock solid that they can't flex at all with out cracking. So hopefully you can get some input from these guys with the versus or gravana kit as to how that fiberglass is but i would sugest going with the bomex unless the gravana is very similar. If your car is a show car only then the stiffy fiberglass wouldn't be so bad but with my car being a daily driver i needed something that could flex some and the bomex does that. Good luck.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the imput. I think I will probably go with the Gravana one and hope for the best.
My thoughts are is that if Gravana is a quality company (and many say so) they would not carry a product that they know is crap.
So I guess Ill give it a try and hope for the best, when I install ill let everyone know if it sucked or not.

Fiberglass thin enough to flex?!?

Wouldn't a rock go through that at 70MPH?

If you are looking for a good kit try the off brand one, I have a aerodesign BMX kit and I got what I paid for, $315 + $125 shipping, the rear bumper didn't fit for shyte (not that I mind, even if it fit well, it still looks like @$$, IMHO.). The rest of the kit fit perfect, zero modifications to put it on.

If you are looking for a great Bomex style kit try to find the "Pure" (brand name) BMX kit full urethane and exelent quality and fitment.

I got my urethane front and sides for around $400 shipped, After I destroy my glass front I will install them, but i did test fit them and not a flaw on them.

Well it's not really like super thin....bomex uses a flexible resin which allows the kit to flex more like a urethane kit. So far i haven't had a rock go threw it. <crosses fingers>

$1000 for a real bomex kit?
Go on the bomex website and look under distributors. I was able to get a real bomex kit from a distributor for like 700 shipped. That included taxes. Fitment was perfect. Very nice quality. I would go with the real stuff. But there are many knock offs that don't fit that bad.
