Cosmetic Damage

Well I was on my way to work today, and if you've seen Tommy Boy and their busted up GTX well the hood flipped up on my Cav right into my windshield and on to my roof as it folded over. Not fun, and prety scary at 70mph. Needless to say, I still had some Christmas gift bags in my car. So I Macgyvered up a concontion of rope handles and tied it down and got her home. It ripped the latch bolts right out from their threads.

Yada Yada Yada and a $2500 estimate from the body shop later (New Hood, Windshield, and newly skinned roof) I was patting myself on the back for having full coverage. Then they said they might not cover it as I didn't hit anything on the road (ya and Michigan is suposed to have the best regulations on auto insurance). Anyway they agreed to cover it, and told me to get my out of the ballpark estimate. Then the body shop guy said they'll pry want to total it. I just wondered if anyone has went through this process. I heard they give ya trade in when they total them, which is $900 for my car. Ya know, not including my system, my wheels and tires, my suspension, header, and a newer 2.4.

Just a word of advice from the body shop guy. All you who own older cavs (2000 or older) see what your insurance would give you if they totaled it. He said that J-bodies go for so cheap at the insurance auctions anymore that they dont' pay out. So if you find out it's a low pay out for a total, switch your insurance to PLPD. Because in the end if you have full insurance you'll be paying roughly $600 (if you pay your own insurance instead of being under your parrents). Times that by 2 (2 times a year) and you've dumped $1200 into insurance when the most they'll give ya for your car could be less.

Anyway if anyone has bean through this, give me a holler.

Problem with switching your insurance is if the car has a lien on it (you're still paying on it), you MUST have full coverage or the bank can reposess the car.

Sucks that you are going through that, good luck. If they do end up totaling the car, they are required to give you fair market value, not trade in.

Oh, and don't just sign anything they slide in front of you. If an adjuster gives you something, like a settlement paper, use the words, "let me run this by my lawyer and get back to you." And sit on it for a couple days.

should have purchased GAP protection when you financed the car. Then you wouldn;t have to worry about a single thing.

Shifted - I forgot about that part of it, if your financing it. As far as the contracts i am the kid that spends 1/2 hour reading the contracts for store cards to make sure i know all of the BS clauses. Thank God for Law classes.

Juice - I bought the car in 2000, and have since paid it off.
