The 3rd brake light used to be an option part, now everyone has them. I know if your in NY, as long as you dont bring attention to yourself, you wont get a ticket, but then again, due to your year car, you wont pass inspection here without it.

Just ran across this old topic, and I thought I'd mention that this is a ridiculous and... oh yeah, dangerous modification. Please do NOT do this!

Not only do third brake lights often add a nice touch to the styling of a car, they provide an important idiot- and panic-proof way to know for sure whether the car in front of you is braking - or for the driver behind your "modded" J-body to know that you're braking.

For this reason, CHMSL's (center-high-mounted stop lights) have been a federal requirement on all vehicles in the US since the 80's. Passing a visual inspection doesn't mean that you can't get slapped with one hell of a ticket at any time by any officer or trooper. I'm sure that anyone with a friend or family member who has died or been injured in a car accident can beat some sense into your head...

The person following so closely behind a car that they can't tell if its slowing down is the real problem.

when i shaved my spoiler there was a couple weeks before i replaced my 3rd brake light, a few friends following me said they had a hard time knowing when my breaks came on at night unless they were paying attention to them when i pressed them
