...that it is repairable.
Just thought i would post this to get any tips or different way to fix this bumper. I got it for free(thanks to Jeff aka Karnage) and all the f/g materials are free so i figured why not try to save it and use it temp till i get my full body kit. Its a real Bomex(stamp on the back to prove it) but basically what im looking for is some tips that some Fiberglassers have..
So far i have fiberglassed up a hole and a crack that is in the lip, Then using body filler to be able to get a better edge for the lip. Most the body filler will be sanded off today so thats not done being sanded yet. Now in the pics below you'll see a nice chunk of the bumper missing. No i do not have the peice missing.. i wish i did.., but what i did was take my old styrofoam crush guard from my old 96 bumper and cut it in half then started forming the half i needed as a mold. This mold will slide right behind the bumper, so i can glass over it and use it to form the top peice i need. I covered it in duct tape to smooth it out a lil and so it doesnt try and fill in the holes in the crush guard, then covered teh whole thing in foil cuz anyone who fiberglasses should know resin gets really hot! so the foil will keep my mold from melting. Basically what im asking is, is this a good way to accomplish repairing this piece? Anyone have any better suggestions? On the missing chunk i do have a peice on teh bottom that is the bend in the mount which will hopefully glass on today to give the bumper some structure cuz right now i have the other half of teh crush guard supporting the top part. Also yes i know i will need to fiberglass the back of the peices i fix for a better fix also. im not a complete beginner in fiberglassing.
o yeah, to add some fun and pressure. i got 17 days with 3-5hrs of work a day.. think i can finish it by then? lol

wow bro thats bad and good luck i would do exactly what your doing and stretch glass cloth right over that hole!
good luck bro!
Who needs a sig?

Wow dude, that is a monster job and to be honest just stretching material over it and glassing over top of it will be a really really weak point in your bumper.
Your definately going to want to fiberglass behind that hole as well to stregthen it.
becareful how much hardener you use in each coat of resin because if you over do it, your repair will end up cracking in the warm weather.
That's one hell of a project so good luck man.
Lol same reactions i got when people in teh shop saw it lol
Here is a lil more progess.. i just used tape under the gap to get somewhat form..tomma ill sand it smooth and down to level then put proly 3-4 more layers of glass on the 2 i put today.. the 2 were basically to have something for structure on it.

Also here is a pic of the mold i made yesterday
idk man, thats gonna be tough to fix right, but good luck

I would get sheet metal and put some on the back side in order to sort of make the shape, then screw it on to the bumper or use rivets (from the back side). the just shave whatever;s poking out through the front, and fiberglass over the sheetmetal.. be sure to use alot of layers though. your method should work too, just use enough layers to make it strong enough, ive fixed bumpers much worse than that, so u should be fine.
Even if it doesnt work out right.. its better than sitting in my garage...and its a good project to practice glass
Funny part is I was gonna toss it, but I thought maybe someone would want it at some point

Jeff ur shed is the sh!t lmao. there is so much fun to be had in there lol.
WOW... lets hope that didnt come out right

lol
its ok.. bri said the same thing..
I do have a lot of intakes and seats and broken bumpers in there.. YAY !

For the record.. my shed has a locked back door..
well.. no back door, but you get what im saying
Get some more progress tomorrow ! I love to see this bumper come back to life..

Patience.....
Fiberglass is hard to work with if you don't know what you are doing but even I had no clue whenever I got my blitz bumper shattered, cracked, broken, huge chunk missing out of the bottom, and just plain GONE. I was in Tampa not too long ago and broke and shattered it again so I have the stock bumper on right now and repairing the blitz in the garage. Good luck with that bumper, because it will look good when your done with it. Worth the effort.
Yeh, i wont be able to give you guys progress till like Tuesday afternoon, maybe monday Night. pictures anyway i can tell u what i did lol but its much better with pics, because my mom took my camera with her to a event her work is holding in Seattle. But yes, im not rushing on it thats for sure, As i was doing this bumper yesterday i was also putting and aligning a stubborn el camino fender.. it was aftermarket fender and we all know how those fit and align. And today i start painting a fender for my mom's car.. Also i got another bumper im doing(lil harder and ull have to wait to see that) so the bomex isnt the only thing im doing..

sounded a lil ghey"ish"
jk
dude Joe, he had 3 Intakes in his shed..(2 now

) and some stock seats and all kinda of @!#$ to mess with.. You woulda wanted to hang out in there too lol
Reminds me of when my bomex front got ran over by a jeep in the middle of downtown dayton... i hauled that thing home in 9 pieces and put it back together over the weekend cost me under 40 bucks to fix and their insurance gave me 1300 bucks lol.. Im now in the process of trying to fix my drift sag with glass instead of the L bracket method...im just trying to figure out the best way to do it..
Scuff up the surface before go adding anymore resign. From the picture it does not look like you added any. What I would do is just get some duct tape and make the flat part all the way across the top out of it. Put some foil so that the resign and the mat does not stick to it and glass it from the back. Use small strips to glass it in. Not one big sheet. It will be stronger than anything on that bumper. Then after it has cured. Take the tape off and put a layer onthe top. Sand the crap out of it till you get a ruff shape and if it needs any filling in deep spots just make some more resign and get small bits on fiberglass and fill it in. After that make sure it fits on the car. Then get your body filler and finish it up. Just make sure you scuff up the surface and that there is no paint on the part you are putting fiberglass on. It will not stick after time. Good luck with it.
first thing you should do before any fiberglass is attached, is make a jig to hole the bumper exactly how it needs to be or when you get done the bumper wont be straight and all your time will be waisted, make a good solid jig to hold the bumper securely then you can start the reapair process. fiberglass shrinks when it cures up to 48 hours after it has dried so make sure that thing is secure. then i would look at possibly making a mould out of the good side of the bumper and transfer it over to the bad side if it matches up (cant verify from pictures) your styrofoam idea isnt a bad idea i'd just make sure you could secure it properly, and if you fiberglass is getting that hot your using to much hardener, using to much hardener will cause your fiberglass to be brittle and crack easily.

Hm interesting. thanks jason i guess i can work on the jig tomma. get it all set in place. Should i just use clamps and peices of wood to hold it in place? got any suggestion on what to do for a jig?
So I take it its coming along pretty well ?
Im glad ! I cant wait to see it all back together and at least primered and on the car

that's what i love about fiber glass. my little brother back into my front and took a nice chunk out of it. i was able to fix it fairly easy
