Looking for info/explanations of how to use one of these.
1. What is it.
It is just what it says. A yellow bar of clay.
2. What does it do.
Say you rub your hand across your paint now and it feels gritty, and you feel resistance. The clay bar takes these contaminants off of your paint, making it smoother. It also will take off overspray and some paint marks from other cars, etc.
3. When do you use it.
I try to do it once a year, preferrably after winter (IL road salt = ick)
4. Why do you use it.
It makes your paint look even better when you wax (which you should do after using the clay bar)
5. Benefits/Uses.
See above
6. Thank You for the info. in advance.
No problem

Thanks....awesome explanation.^^^^^^
Have a awesome day

It's kind of a PITA to use because you have to wash/dry your car, first. Then, you clay bar the car. THEN, you have to wash/dry it again before you can polish/wax.
However, I also do this once a year. It's absolutely worth the time and effort and leaves your paint and smooth as you'll ever be able to get it.
its gods gift to paint jobs
I do mine atleast 2 itmes a year. I love in PA so i kinda have to due to the weather. My paint still looks new as the day i bought it thanks to a clay bar.
Anyone know where to get these and approximate cost?
I saw a McGuire's clay bar kit at autozone for like $16. Very worth it after reading the above posts.
Oddly I was looking all over for one like 3 weeks ago, and finally found the last one on a shelf the other day at an out of the way store (Im tryin to figure out why they are elusive ..)
I did a part of the car and put it away and, well, it got all sticky, so apparently its a one time thing (?)
Also, I was doing a part of a car that had hit something and had yellow paint on the car, and it got a large amount of it off.
OK... I just clayed my car last night.
Its a bar of clay (not necessarily Yellow, my Meguiar's is white. My Mother's was yellow) that, when wiped across the surface of your paint ALONG WITH some kind of lubricant (Quick Detailer comes with most kits), will remove surface contaminants from your paint (i.e. overspray, embedded dirt, bugs, tar, sap, etc).
You basically spray the detailer mist onto the car, then lightly slide the clay over the surface you sprayed. Keep sliding until it is smooth. You will feel the dirt/contamination come off.
It does strip all wax off the car, so you are basically left with clear coat only. You must wax the car afterwords (unless you dont value your car's appearance at all, but since you are claying, I highly doubt that).
I've used both Mothers and Meguiars, and they are both pretty similar in price and use. The Meguiars was $1 more, but I received a nice Microfiber cloth with it. The Mother's detailer smells awesome though, and makes you want to clay the car much more often.
Definatly worth the trouble IMO. My car feels so smooth. Today I'll be following up with a Polish and 2-3 coats of wax.
Yeah I used the Mother's one. Any auto parts store should have them (I actually found a kit on sale at Farm & Fleet for $10 lol), and should be around $15 as said above.
Be prepared to spend a couple hours on this, though. As said above, you have to wash, clay bar, and wax (I used a cleaner wax so I didn't wash again after using the clay bar).

Have you ever heard of Meguires BODY SCRUB ? It does the EXACT same thing as a clay bar but its in a liquid form and is infinetly easier to use then the clay bar and so much faster its silly !! I used to do some detailing work I tried the clay bar once when it first came out and was completely un-impressed since the body scrub does the same thing for a fraction of the time and much less effort.
In short forget the Play Doh and use Meguires BODY SCRUB. Its quicker to use, easier to use and yeilds the same results. Its cost is about $7.00 a bottle.
Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
I've never seen Body Scrub on the shelf (might be a problem if you were wanting to do something ASAP). Plus, being a liquid, I would assume there would be a greater chance of causing swirls. (I dont entirely buy Meguiars' claims that their products don't cause swirls).
Nope no swirls.
Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
Added note to an above post - You can save the clay bar and reuse if you put it in a ziploc bag. I have done it, however eventually it will become all dirty and you will know its time has come.
I just used McGuires clay bar on my car. It is amazing feeling and seeing all the crap come off the paint as you do it. I will now be doing this twice a year. And by the way Jackalop, I feel the clay bar is much easier to use than a liquid. I did my whole car faster then i did with either the paint cleaner, polish, and wax. But I have never used body scrub though so who knows.
Go Go OG Traction!!
I seen the detailers using the clay bar at work, and I was impressed with what was coming off of the paint too. I'll be picking some of this stuff up to try it myself
So what all is involved in using the clay bar? Do you have to wax your car after you use it? I really wanna do this to my car, but I am lazy, so I might use the Body Scrub stuff.
Well you dont' have to, but it leaves your paint with no protection. I wouldn't clay a car and not wax it.
clay bar is INSANE
never seen anything like it.
my car has 100k on it and is 6 years old. never really waxed and not washed all that often.
ore clay bar MUCH oxidation and LOTS of contimation in the white paint. to the eye it looks pretty good. to the touch it feels VERY rough even after a nice bath.
after clay bar CLEAN and smooth as glass. INSANE
but yeah u have to give it at least a coat of wax after.
The biggest hole, is the illusion of invulnerability.
