ok, inside and right below the fuel door is the only rust problem on my car, but it is extensive and deep. i was scratching at the rust while bored earlier and put my knife blade all the way through the metal, i know normally it would be a cut out and put new metal in job is that a safe option being fuel vapors pesent in the work area? if that is my only option is the a way to make workin in this area safer? the area in question is about 6 inches wide and runs from the filler neck to the bumber cover. thanks for any help or advice given.
if its rusted all the way through then you need to cut out the metal and weld in new metal for it to be correctly fixed. since its in the area of the tank. the tank and filler tube would have to be pulled before doing anything
ok thanks man, also does anybody have an idea on what type of metal to use? i have body filler and equipment to do it or since i am building it as a sleeper should i leave it alone?
I woundn't just leave it alone. However The use of "Sheet metal" cutting and tack welding is the right way to replace the rusted part. Even a whole new 1/4 panel. Bondo is for the back yard mech. its ok to fill your problem in But with that area the rust will come back ...sandblasting sealing it and priming and painting might work but again If you don't own air tools, a sand blaster and a welder this might be a lot of work ......Allways!!!!! remove the gas tank and neck when working near it heat sparks flame and poof

Remove the filler tube and that is it. Then get yourself a welding blanket. No need to remove the tank. We do hundred of quarter panel jobs without taking the tank out. There is no need to. Just remove the hose.
Hmmm.... I had my quarter panel replaced at a GM dealer... they didn't touch the tank.
easiest way to fix it.... relocate the fuel filler neck and just cut that whole section out and replace it with stock part cut off another car or reloactae the neck and shave the door
