Well I had yesterday off work so I hit up a couple body shops for quotes to put eyelids on my stock hood. I talked with one guy and he said 700-800 with paint. This first shop mostly did collisions and was not to weary on them doing to the work.
I hit up another shop which is into customizing and hot rods and he said $1000 to quote high but it would probably be less. He said there is alot of work there to do it properly. He would custom cut/roll the sheet metal, put a nice bevel/fold on the edge like the stock hood. Do the body work. Repaint the hood. fitment etc etc. He seemed to know what he was talking about. But for that kind of money. $1000 is crazy. But if you want it done right. Then you got to pay right?
I told him i'm almost crazy enough to go out and buy fiberglass hood (ram air etc etc) and put that on. It would still be even cheaper with painting that on top of the price of the fiberglass hood or even if I went carbon fiber.
So i guess my question is. Are these guys prices out rageous?
The second shop I would probably take it to since they do all custom work and the guy said he doesnt let the car leave until he is happy with the work and warranty's the paint for life from defects and has one of the best sheet metal workers in the city and all the proper machines to do it. They make alot of there own body panels as well. So that gives you an idea on the quality.
The reason I dont want to go with fiberglass is b/c I dont want to use hood pins. I dont like the way they look. I dont do much highway driving but I do the odd bit. Is there anyway of preventing hood pop-up?
Regards,
My eyelids how to post
here's how mine turned out...
There's many different ways of doing it... I don't know if that will help you out all or not, but if it does then awesome lol.
dude that is some crazy pricing. I can see maybe $300 or $350 to weld in it, grind it down smooth, primer hood, repaint and clear. I would never pay that much. You coudl maybe try and find a local person that does welding and have them make do the eyelid insert and weld it in and then just take it to the shop for prep and paint. If you were near dallas, tx i would do it for you but of course your not.
Whiteboy,
I was thinking of ordering that new hood. Is it a one peice or two piece fiberglass hood? Does it come with the grill for the cut-out? How high is the quality? Much prep work involved? I know you can spend alot of time getting waves out of fiberglass or inperfections.
I was thinking of maybe going carbon fiber. But I havent decided.
Regards,
$10 can of paint and spray on eylids onto your sunfire headlights; thats what i did; yes it dont look as good as having them as part of the hood; but it gives me my evil eyelid look; and it cost me $1o and a bit of my time.
98 j-body sedan
yes that is an outrageous price quote.
here are a few suggestions:
1) keep stock hood w/eyelids. buy a stock hood at a junker (50 bucks maybe). buy the metal eyelids sometimes on ebay (30 or so). find a local backyard mechanic to weld them on (not like they can mess up a tiny weld or two), grind down, etc (case of beer). take it to a shop and get it painted (150 max) sell stock hood (50-100)
2) fiberglass/carbon fiber hood. buy a used aftermarket hood (prices vary--but a busted or cracked hood will be dirt cheap). fiberglass it yourself (easy as pie...20-30 in materials MAX). take it to a shop and get it painted (150 max) sell stock hood (50-100)

There is 2 options to the hood, you can get the hole cut out or you can leave it filled. If you want it cut I will ass the mesh to the hood for you.
Also about the quality, its great. Here is a couple customers that bought the hood.

Whiteboy,
Quality and fitment looks great. But you guarantee no need for hood pins? I hate hood pins. Do you have any pictures with the mesh put in? Or is it a little metal grill that goes over top of the cut out? to keep it looking alot cleaner. Or is it cut out and the mesh fiberglassed on behind the hole.
Regards,
Whiteboy,
Also I forgot. Do you have pictures of the underside of the hood?
I can not guarantee no need for hood pins for legal reasons, even RK Sports can not guarantee no need for hood pins. I have no pictures with the hole cut and mesh behind it, or a picture of the underside of the hood. But the underside is unfinished.
Is it a one piece hood or two piece hood? I think it would be alot stronger if it was two piece wouldnt you think? I understand how you can't guarantee the need for hood pins or not for legal reasons.
I glassed my hood stiker to my fg hood to try to add some security against the hood coming unlatch and flying up. been driving a year or so, everyday on the highway 120+ and *knock on wood* so far so good.

Yes, it is 2 pieces there is the top and there is the skeleton on the bottom for extra strength.
I'd say buy the hood from whiteboy for $ saving purposes. Alot more economical if you ask me.
