well....i have a bit of a dilema. the car is sitting in primer, ready to be sprayed, i have all the paint, but i cannot for the life of me find a place to spray it. the car was already supposed to be out and ive missed a bunch of shows. at this rate i have no idea when it will be ready. im getting so frustrated with this project it has me thinking of just selling it and be done with it. I could take it somewhere and have them spray it, but with the ammount of $ i already have into it just in the past 4-5 months is probably more than most paid for their J-body(you dont wanna know the $ figure!) and i refuse to spend another couple thousand just to get it painted.
I could in theory paint it in my garage, but I fear neighbors being pissed, my makeshift paint booth going ka-boom from ignition, and a dirty paint job.
To top it all off, I want to sell my house and buy something outside the city/suburbs thats a little more country where I can have a nice barn and garage setup. I do interiors on the side and have a line forming while they wait for me to finish the car
so.....here are my options that im looking at:
1) put it all back together in primer, ride this year out and paint it next year somehow
2) put it all back together and SELL it
3) hold off puting it back together and just skip this year all together and come out with it next year
4) paint it in the garage and be done
5) burn it to the ground!
this whole situation is just depressing the hell out of me and my mind is running in circles. what do you guys think i should do?
Please only post honest feedback. Thanks
Number 5.
Joking, theres a few places here that would paint it cheap since you have paint. And theres booths to rent here. So im sure there might be some around you.
Well # 3 is what i have done. Seeing i go to college full time and had quite a bit of expenses and was only making 8.10/hr... Buying my type J kit, new 18"s with rubber, and a full out exhaust killed me last year. Do it right the first time joe, ride out the season and make arrangements for next year. Don't let this project go down without a fight or logically thinking this through. I've always been an admirer of your progress and car. So My vote is # 3. I think all JBO'er have been here at some point.
....I've still yet to get mine on the road this year. She's only been out in the yard.
Do it once, and do it right.
You've put a lot of time, money, and effort into this car, Joey. Personally, I think your are just letting frustration get the best of you right now. Be patient.
I say put the car aside for a little and focus on other things. Come back to it in a month or so. Who knows, maybe someone will offer to help you out on here, or knows someone who can.
I'd personally just suck it up and have it sprayed, if the car is fairly well prepped it may not be nearly as much as you're figuring.
From what I've heard, the car is pretty wild, so I have a hard time believing you couldn't find a decent place to sponsor you whether it be just cutting labor cost on spraying it.
questions...
1. How close are you to your neighbors?
2. Do you have a ventilation system of some sort set up?
3. Do you already paint interior parts in your garage? If so....
4. Have your neighbors complained about that?
5. Have you checked local laws on possible penalties for spraying in your garage?
Save the money by leaving to car alone for now, wait until you get a place like you wan't, then paint the car once your all moved in. That way, you'll do it yourself like you want, and be able to do it right. Waiting for things sucks (believe me I know), but sometimes it's the best way.
Don't give you man, I know how you feel. Im in the middle or restoring an old MG and Im getting to the point were Im already tired of it and want to sell. Take a brake for a few weeks. Do mabye a couple of those interior jobs and come back to your car later. Like mentioned, mabye when you move into your new place. After a while of not thinking about it and not working on it you will start to want to go back and enjoy it again.

x2 Joe did you ask the cops yet to see if theres any laws on doing it in your garage... Also didnt you do fiberglass peices in your house, I mean if your neighbors didnt complain about those I doubt they'll complain about the paint
if you leave it alone and keep it out of mind for awhile, youll come back to it and youll love it all again
there comes a time where you need a break with everything
Find local school or college with Auto Body and contact admin and ask for the number of the instructor and see if you can work out with them to borrow their booth.. i had to do similar last summer
but im sure it helped me being a old student tho..
could you maybe rent a booth at a local body shop?... it wouldn't/shouldn't cost much if you could since your doing all labor yourself.
Check out my build thread!
I've heard of some people using those public car wash stalls after hours.....rather like a spec-ops mission if you
can get away with it! LOL
Because STOCK is boring...
i would just paint it in the garage dude. Paint supplies aren't THAT much. If for some reason your really unhappy with it, you can always do it again and still be way under the cost of having somebody else do it. As long as you take your time with it, i'm sure it will turn out great.
wait and just rock it in primer for now.
hell andy brooks sunfire was in primer but it looked good.

the neighbors may complain when theres over spray on there cars, i live in the burbs and don't paint anything but little pieces in my garage with the door half closed, just in case, because the woman next door drives a Cadillac SUV and i don't want to pay for that repaint.
ive heard of guys renting a storage locker for a month and painting there. as long as you clean everything up after your done it should be fine. some places around here even rent them with ventilation and hydro for contractors. maybe try to find a one near you.
burning the car is not a good option. insurance companies spot that kind of stuff right away. honestly if it get to that point (i really hope not i love your car) just hit a parked car with it. but thats an extreme last resort.
ive had a lot of time i just want to drive my car in to a wall and say F$%@ it, when i get to that point i just leave it alone for awhile and invest my time in something else. when im really frustrated with the car, ill take the kid out for lunch or just sit around and watch DORA the Explorer with her. its the total opposite of the car and i need that sometimes.
good luck man, im sure it will work out. maybe you should buy a DORA the Explorer DVD j/k.

wow....wasnt expecting this big of a response!! thanks for all the input guys. im feeling better today about the whole situation. yesterday was a bad day, lol.
i sat and stared at the car last(over a few beers
) just trying to figure out what to do. as i sat there, i noticed some things id like to do different on the car, and some things id like to add. so, this is the plan i think im gonna go with:
1) spray the car with flat black outside, and finish painting the interior for the rest of this year.
2) put it back together and ride it in flat black for the rest of the year.
3) after this season, tear it all back down and fix the things i dont like, and also add some more craziness
4) hope i can get a little exposure for whats already done, and pick up some sponsors
5) rebuild half the interior next winter
6) paint next year
what do u guys think? i know i cant just give up on it. ive put way too much time, money, blood, sweat into this thing to just piss it away.
thanks again for all your guys input!!
Me personally, knowing how much i had put into the car, i would do #3 for now, sounds like you've put your heart and soul into this car and i don't think you really want to do the #5 option. Good luck man, hope everything turns out ok in the end.
i go threw the same thing every year, come out seeing the car on jackstands unfinished a month behind schedule and you just want to say screw it and sell it. then when you start thinking about how little your going to get for it versus how much youve spent you know your better off just keeping it. i think your plan is good. there are allot of bigger shows with an under construction class so go for that to get you out of the garage and into the sun a bit so the fumes can clear lol.

dont worry man...I feel your pain. I've been so close to quiting myself.
Just paint in your garage or wait till next yr to paint. This car MUST be finished!!!
Good to hear Joe. Sucks it it won't be out, but I think you are going a good route.
Wide Body Progress
hey man me and my boys back home in indiana used to use a garage with neighbors very close ( 3yards). we closed all the doors hung sheets all around making a makeshift booth then sprayed to floor with water soaking it for 2 hrs prior to painting and kept it wet to keep dust and debris down, we also had a bug zapper lamp outsid of the sheets to keep the bugs out of the paint workd brilliantly. the worst part of it was not being able to bake the paint... we only painted flat black tho (ppg hot rod black) if we wouldve used a multistage gloss or pearl we would have def been iin a booth for real with baking capabilities. the wet flor is the key to keepin imperfection out of the flat if you wetsand part of the flat you have to do the whole thing as it makes the flat an almost satin, we found out the hard way
good luck tho
ya, ive been researching home made paint booths for a couple months. im sure im over thinking it all, but after finding a few things on it im not happy with on the car, i think flat blacking it and adding alot more next winter is my best bet. along with all the $ i still need to put into it, i think i just need a break from it, lol. 7 months of working on it 5-6 days a week is getting real old, lol
thanks again guys. ill have pics up soon with the final product. heading out now to flat black it and start re-assembling it
hopefully bagged again by tonight
