Flowmaster. 40 series is raspier, 50 series is deeper toned, anything bigger probably won't fit. If you want a good, deep tone, replace the factory resonator with an aftermarket one thats longer along with the muffler installation.

a big resonator should give it the nice deep sound, maybe look into Borla, I have seen one before and it sounded really good as well, very rich.

right after the cat if I am not mistaken, I think we have a rather small one.
from what I understand, the bigger is is the deeper the tone should be(correct me if I am wrong), that is why when most people put straight pipe exaust on it is usually really high pitched and annoying.
I hope that is correct, but that is my understanding

You're right Steve. Volume = deep tone. Resonators add volume, and the bigger it is, the more volume it adds, and the deeper it gets. speaking of which, the muffler I have on my car has a 3" inlet, 5" outlet, and is something like 8-10 inches across in the body, its such a bassy tone that I can start it up at work, walk inside and still hear the bass (more like feel). So the more volume you have in the exhaust, the deeper the note.
One problem with lots of volume though, especially on small engined cars is you lose some velocity, and hence a bit of upper rpm power.

Don't listen to him. Get a universal muffler from magnaflow or a dynomax super-turbo muffler. The key is to find the LONGEST muffler with the largest INTERIOR DAMPED volume (NOT largest flow path - the one with the most damping material) that will fit under there. The more damping material you have, the deeper the exhaust will be (and it will keep it quieter) - a muffler thats 4" round will have much less damping material than one that is 4x9 oval, and 5x8 oval has more than 4x9 and so on (5x8x20 is stock muffler length). So assuming your exhaust is stock apart from the muffler, get a muffler with 2" in/out (centre in, offset out), either 4x9" oval or 5x8" oval and 18"-20". I'm running a Finish it off with a small tip, magnaflow has a pretty good selection of stock looking ones.

That's a vid of my old exhaust (turbo now, so I've changed it since then...), notice how deep it is. You WONT get that if you follow Greg's advice - I would bet money that with his 3" in and 5" out it may sound cool in car, and at idle, but when he romps on it, from the outside it's going to sound like any other honda out there with a fart can.

so would a 40 or 50 series Flowmaster muffler be good with a Flowmaster tip?

so, wouldn't a big resonator and big muffler give a great sound, nice and low?

Flowmasters are chambered/baffled mufflers, no damping material in them (ie glass). As for my muffler, I measured it and its 3"INLET, 5"TIP, the perf core is also 3" diameter, and the body is 7" diameter (which gives about 4" between the outer case and the core for damping material), body length is 15", total length is nearly 20 inches. Its an older Hayame type 2, the ones they put out now aren't as big, and would probably sound raspier. I would have to say it has more damping material than most glasspack-type mufflers, and I am dead serious about the sound being deep and bassy. And when I romp on it, it doesn't sound fart-cannish at all. I'll borrow a tape recorder or something and record some idling, and some good revs, then go for a spirited drive and record that also. It rankles me a bit that Mr. Dunsmoor said what he did without hearing it firsthand. True, most mufflers that LOOK like mine are on the raspy side, but never judge a book by its cover.

Anyway, I'm getting off topic, my muffler is definitely not stock looking, so you would not want one anyways. Borla, Flowmaster, and Magnaflow all make good stock to semi-stock looking mufflers that sound very good. You'll still want a long resonator though, a straight pipe will definitely make it sound raspy.

And Mr. Dunsmoor, I watched your video, sounds awesome, almost exactly like mine in fact. Is that exhaust setup factory before the muffler, or did you make other changes as well? I still need to get my exhaust upgraded, all I have is that muffler and about 15 inches of 2.25 formed pipe connecting it to the stock exhaust with a reducer.
