my cf hood has oxidized and doesnt look pretty now after a few years....
can i sand it and rattle-can it with GM black and then clear coat it?
i know the paint will match, im not worried about that. im wondering what grit sandpaper i should use? and any kind of clearcoat?
i checked at body shops and it was like 300$ to paint it, so im going to do it myself, the best i can.
thank you call for the posts!

if you want it done right get a shop to do it.call a few places I don't see it being 300 just for a hood. I've seen places paint a whole body kit for 400.
you can sand down the clear coat and reclear it to bring back the cf goodness. i sure as hell wouldn't rattle can a hood w/ black paint.

my carDomain updated 11/5/07 I've got premium. Yes I do. I've got premium. How 'bout you?
rattle can
this place always amazes me
if you rattle can your hood it will look like @!#$ and you will be able to tell a difference between the hood and the rest of the car. either take it to a shop to get it done right and yes 300 is probably your average price to get a hood painted or take it to a shop and have them sand the clear off and re clear it. the reason the hood looks like that is because it wasnt waxed often. you will need to reclear it to get it to look normal again
my grandfather and i wetsanded my cf hood with 240 grit wet sand paper, looked great until i took the car on a long road trip. if you insist on rattle-caning please use something better than normal rattle cans like alsa corps 1 or 2K cans. they end up looking ALOT better than regular duplicolor or some other brand cans do.

every place i have been to says they can't fix it.
Then they shouldn't be running a shop. All it takes is a little sanding and a fresh coat of clear.

Rattle cans are the devil, and yes you WILL be able to tell a difference, and yes it will look like crap. I don't care if you get "GM factory rattle can" paint, you're still going to be able to tell the difference.
now for the details: the discoloration is from freon that leaked from my A/C system and went out the vents on the hood and left stains right above them.
also, i can see the discoloration following the CF strands, so its past the clear coat and into the CF.
so im down to 2 options....
pay or do it myself. i have exp. rattle canning, and the work ive done in the past wasnt bad...

^^^
and also, if it wasnt into the CF i would try to keep it. however it is and its not because it didnt get waxed. i waxed it every 3 months....
also, if i rattle can it and dont like it, i can get it sanded and painted again by a body shop.....
now do you guys see what situation im in?

get the hood stripped of the clear and reclear it. problem solve. dont rattle can it
...........................................if i do that.................................................
then im going to be sanding and re-clear coating CF that is damaged and that will show the white stains through the new clear coat.....
does anyone understand what im saying? i cant just sand and re-clear coat. the CF is ruined. all i can do now is paint it body color
like i said i have 2 options. and spending 300$ getting it painted eliminates that option....
so really i have 1 option. ill post pics of my work when im done.

if its discolored on the outside its probably the clear coat and not the actual cf. anyway take it to a shop and have them wet sand the clear off and see if it gets rid of it, if not then have them paint the hood. you doing anything to the car is going to make it worse.
so the plan is to wet sand it tonight. im going to see if it is all the way through. if it is (and im pretty confidant it is) then im going to paint it body color. if for some reason its not the i will re-clear it and see what happens.
im trying to clean my car up a little bit. i feel the CF look is a little too flashy for what direction i now want to go with my car.
my plan was to get the hood body color, then get the windows tinted darker and get some black rims
ill post pics as soon as i get em
i actually rattle-canned my last white hood on my old car and it looked good. it lasted through a winter and i didnt even clear coat it, haha!
so i am confidant with my paint skills.....but ive never clear-coated before, hence the reason for this thread

well good luck id just pay a body shop to do it and save the headaches but its not my car
i apperciate the input! and thank you all for the help/posts.
if it turns out horrible i will take it to a body shop after winter and have them do it. thats the great thing about paint

take it to a shop. it costs like $200 at a shop that i worked at to sand/ repaint and reclear a hood.
Well... if you end up taking it to a shop... they're going to really really hate you for rattle canning it. rattle can paint doesn't "dry" like actual automotive grade paint, it will be a bitch to remove, and it's still going to look like sh*t compared to the rest of the car. rattle can paint fades quicker, so even if you get a halfway decent job out of it, you're gong to be able to tell fairly quickly, and well... it's going to look like crap. But what do I know lol

ive personally seen a car that had some pieces rattle canned white BUT it was grafity feed gun cleared and it turned out AWESOME. but yes, if it's just spray bombed it wont look as good as stock, but you CAN get it to turn out decent with enough wetsanding/buffing/waxing
Black car... black rattle can paint on the hood... it's going to look like crap. You're going to be able to tell very easily the difference, no matter what.
BTW.... do you purposely follow any posts I make in this forum and have to argue with everything I say? I mean, it's not like I did auto body / collision repair / painting for 5+ years or anything... or like I had one of the cars I did the work on used as an example on THE paint company's website or anything... oh I forgot, I remember you telling me a woman's place was in the kitchen making you bacon and eggs. I don't think I've EVER made a post in here answering someone's question where you haven't posted or quoted what I was saying, arguing with me in some way to some degree about my answer.
UPDATE:
well i wet-sanded it today (off the car of course). i wet-sanded for a good hour, then hung it in my garage.
from there i cleaned it A LOT, took the screens out to paint em seperatly.
and i decided to re-clear coat it......and stay with the CF look...
i went through 3 cans of clear-coat tonight, and so far it looks awesome. but im going to put another 2 cans on tomorrow, then polish and then wax.
ill post some pics this weekend.....

Done the right way. I even had them sand down the CF the best they could. Granted the hood was 2 years old when i got it and had some damage on the corners. hence the reason i got it painted. you can still see a little bit of hazing in some spots but looks a LOT better than it did. Sounds like you already started to "fix" it.
Trust me... get it done professionally! will look so much better...

paul tjepkes on here rattle can painted his passenger side fender recently (its a black car) and it doesnt look like 'crap' it acctually doesnt look to bad at all. ill try and get him to post up a picture later.

no i dont, i was acctually trying to be nice about it. if you didnt notice, ive been trying not to get into things with you just because it always ends up in a huge argument. i just give my experiences on things, if you dont like it, sorry. i realize you have way more experience and such, but you dont like to hear about anything anybody else has to say, it's always your way is the best way and any other way is futile. now im not trying to put you down or anything, you obviously know what your talking about and have for a long time, but its not just you on this site with experience.
I've never heard of Freon staining anything... and either way your car doesn't have Freon
