Carbon Fiber Hood Question
Sunday, January 20, 2008 12:57 PM
Just picked up a VIS OEM carbon fiber hood (used for i think 4 years)
my qustion is do I HAVE to use hood pin?, there were no hood pins in it so i figure if its been good for 4 years then it still should be.

hood pins are just a safety feature. some people use them, some (like myself) don't.

I had them on my car because the airflow lifted up the inner headlight corners of the hood. Doesn't help that I have the two vents right in the middle of the bumper. Most Cavs that I've seen with CF hoods don't use pins because they don't have that problem.

no, you dont have to use hood pins. most companies list them as "needing" hood pins simply as a way limit their own liability. but accidents do happen because there is a lot of pick up caused by the air flowing under the gap in the cav hood/bumper. so its up to you on what to do. the chances are that you will be fine. but if you run without them dont complain if your hood flies up and busts your windshield or makes you wreck. i know a few people that that has happened to and i know tons more that have been fine w/o em. so it just comes down to what you want to do.

fines? you're not going to get fines for having a carbon fiber hood without pins.

the good thing about the VIS hoods is they do not retain the stock 'hole' underneath the catch latch that bolts to the hood. With a VIS, its completely solid right there. ive seen other cf hood manufacturers that have bored that hole there though...

the problem usually lies with the bolts being ripped out of there threads in the hood, but really is not a MAJOR issue on our cars.

take mine for instance, VIS oem style, ive had it on the car for 2 summers and the car saw a few 125mph stints and the hood was fine.

the companies that utilize this feature usually do so as a drainage point for moisture or any water that gets trapped between the outside (top) layer and the frame (bottom) itself. generally, the top is carbon and the frame is glass.

the thing i like about VIS is that usually the bottom also has a carbon layer on top, giving the appearance of a fully carbon hood (even though no production hoods for the cavs are fully carbon)

Its just a safety feature for you. If you don't plan on going too fast than you really don't need it. I put them on my car because like the other guy, mine was lifting at the bolts/hinge. It is recommended that if you ever go past 100 or hit anything close to that to put hood pins on. I had a friend who didn't have them on and at the strip his hood flew up and blew up it looked like haha, well, it just flew up cracked windshield and sunroof and the hood split in 5 pieces.
