I recently purchased a set of projector housings off ebay (I went the cheap way unfortunately.... full time student = full time broke) And managed to fit them on without much trouble. They look good, however the light with the stock bulbs is horrid. I have an hid kit on the way from retro solutions, to alleviate this problem... I really hope it is alot brighter, dont want to switch back to stock housing!
My question though.....
When I looked inside the projector housing where the bulb inserts....... I noticed a piece of metal mounted inside in the shape of a half circle. It looks like it blocks off half of the projector, but I thought this might be how they were made at the time......
Ive been second guessing myself and wondering if this half circle thing is a reason why the stock bulbs are so bad in them.
Does anyone know if this metal piece is supposed to be there? Does it have a purpose.... if not, it looks like a real pain to get out as the only way to get at with would be through the bulb hole.
Please Help! I dont want to get my hids all set up and happy and then find out they are useless because of this stupid metal piece!
Thanks everybody ahead of time!
SOUNDS TO ME LIKE YOU ARE DESCRIBING THE CUTOFF SHIELD, ALTHOUGH A PIC WOULD CONFIRM THIS. WITHOUT IT, LIGHT WOULD ESCAPE ALL OVER, DEFEATING ONE OF THE PURPOSES OF THE PROJECTOR.
YOUR HID KIT WILL ILLUMINATE EVERYTHING MUCH BETTER, ALTHOUGH I HAVE NEVER SEEN A GREAT OUTPUT FROM THE CHEAPER UNITS.
Ok great, thats very relieving to know its supposed to be there, and Im assuming it is what you are calling the cutoff because its the only thing in there. I know I wont get great output with the cheaper set, I hope to get a good set when I have the money to spare.
Do you think the output will atleast be better than my stock headlight casing?
Thanks again.

after having both of the readily available(one piece and two piece) 95-99 projectors, WITH HIDs, i can say that no, output is NOT better than stock headlights with good (silverstar ultras, piaa, hella). it's just a different shape, and in adverse weather, the output is quite poor.
